Internship description
Jasper Hill Apprentices help us drive the production of exceptional cheese with their relentless curiosity and can-do attitude. They learn alongside some of the country’s most skillful cheesemakers, dividing their time between cheese making at one of our two creameries and caring for cheese as it ages at the Cellars. The work is physical, fast-paced and mentally stimulating. This role often starts early, much of the time is spent cleaning, and it generally requires working at least one weekend day. It also provides one of the best opportunities anywhere to explore the fascinating world of artisan cheese alongside a dedicated team committed to crafting some of the world’s best cheese.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
● Cleaning and sanitizing cheese making and cheese care equipment
● Following established protocols for cheese quality and food safety
● Use of pH meter, moisture analyzer, and other technical equipment
● Record keeping to maintain cheese inventory database
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
● Ability to think ahead to plan workflow
● Stamina to keep moving
● Ability to continually improve the process
● Detail- and process-oriented
● Ability to work on your feet for long stretches, and repeatedly lift 45+ pounds
● Excellent communication skills
● Two years of production work or physical labor preferred
● Chemistry, microbiology or culinary studies preferred
A 12 month commitment is strongly preferred. Compensation includes an hourly wage and housing nearby.
