Long Hearing Farm is a rural worker’s co-op and certified organic farm with a commitment to growing food as if the lives of kids in our communities matter. We grow organic produce and feed families in the Skagit and Stillaguamish valleys in the foothills of the North Cascades Mountains. We run a Farmshare and distribute to farm-to-school programs, local and tribal food pantries and programs, local food hubs, and our nearby food co-op.
Our commitment is to:

1. Feed as many local families as possible through our Farmshare, Farmstand, and direct partnerships with local businesses, tribal nations, and schools.
2. Create equitable land-based livelihoods and teach young people land-based skills.

Job description

Hours:
25-30 hours per week, May - October
Work 3 days per week, including Thursdays. Exact schedule can vary depending on projects, weather, and preference.

Responsibilities:
Our work days can be long, hot, and physically and mentally demanding. We have high expectations for the quality, pace, and consistency from folks who work for us. We want you to
understand that working on a vegetable farm is seasonal for a reason. We rest hard in winter and work hard in summer.

We want you to pay attention to your body and set reasonable boundaries with the team about the conditions you are willing and able to work in. We can’t change the weather, but if you let us know how the conditions are affecting you, we can find a solution together.

This position largely depends on the skill of the individual and the projects that suit their skill set. Below are examples of some the skills we are looking for:

Harvest/Pack: assisting with a small specialized selection of vegetable harvests. In special cases might be asked to support the packshed team with getting an order out the door.

Bed Prep: moving silage tarps around, broadforking, spreading compost, adding amendments to beds.

Field Work: transplanting, weeding, trellising, field clean-up, compost maintenance.

Maintenance Projects: Someone experienced with small machines and comfortable using a weed whacker, handheld power tools, and (after some training) our BCS tractor would be preferred!

Other: Deliveries or other driving errands, washing and scrubbing harvest bins, maintaining record-keeping logs, cleaning and refilling hand-washing stations

Employees are encouraged to take home as many imperfect vegetables as they can eat!

Experience & Qualifications:

• Previous production farm or outdoor work experience preferred.
• Experience in other fast-paced work environments, combined with a desire to farm, is acceptable.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions and a willingness to ask questions when needed
• Experience working with small machines and hand tools

Requirements:

• Strong communication skills: ability and willingness to articulate what does and does not work for you when it comes to any aspect of the job, including training techniques, scheduling, and physical working conditions. This may mean sharing information about your health when relevant.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly
• Ability to work a nine- or ten-hour day with a cumulative one-hour break
• Reliable personal transportation (car, bike, carpool etc. How you get to work is unimportant as long as you are dependable and timely.)
• We use text messages, phone calls and google docs as our primary communication tools. Having a phone that is able to perform these functions is preferred.
• Ability to work outside daily, including in inclement weather (heat, rain, etc.)
• Willingness to commit to the full season
• Ability to take direction and criticism throughout the season and under changing conditions
• Ability to work both independently and with a team
• Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and fluid; change is our only constant on the farm!

Please note that we do not offer on-farm housing.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $16.50 - $17.50
