Company description

Brooklyn Forest offers classes in Central Park and Prospect Park for young children and their caregivers. We believe a wonderful childhood starts with imaginative play and a supportive community; with a meaningful connection to nature and wildlife; with vigorous physical work and nourishing food; with simple rhythms and constant singing; with feeling at home in the forest. Brooklyn Forest began in 2011 as a small class in the woods of Prospect Park for a handful of families from nearby neighborhoods. Now, a decade later, hundreds of children and caregivers from all over the city come every week to play and learn with us in the park. Our classes are still small, but our community is growing.

Job description

Brooklyn Forest School seeks a teacher to guide outdoor parent-child classes five mornings a week this spring, starting March 11.

The weekly schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 12:00 in Prospect Park or Central Park.

The starting wage is $26/hour. A predictable teaching schedule of 17-25 hours/week is based on your seasonal availability; training and sick days are paid. Spring forest school teachers are invited to continue teaching year-round, starting with the summer season in July.

At Brooklyn Forest, we work to nurture the whole child with a simple class that includes imaginative play, delicious food, and a sense of wonder. Learn more about us at www.brooklynforest.org

We value creativity, a high level of attention to detail, and hard work. We are seeking people who are up for the hard yet invigorating work of a forest school teacher. Potential candidates must be flexible and exhibit a willingness to perform any job, whether it's singing in the rain, getting down in the dirt to make mud pies, or lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds of logs and equipment. They must have an appreciation for nature and good food, and a respect for childhood.

Committed to attracting and retaining a diverse staff, Brooklyn Forest School will honor your experiences, perspectives, and unique identity. Together, we strive to create and maintain a working and learning environment that is inclusive, equitable and welcoming.
