Company description

About Happy Valley Meat Co.
Happy Valley Meat Co’s mission is to create a local meat system that treats the people and animals involved fairly. Happy Valley tackles this mission by providing restaurants and institutions access to ethically raised meat from family farmers. Small-scale farmers in the northeast are eager to supply consumers in urban areas but they usually lack the time, infrastructure, scale, distribution, and resources to market whole animals or individual cuts. That’s where Happy Valley Meat Co. (HVM) comes in: we purchase whole animals from farmers, work with small-scale processors to portion and pack market-ready cuts of meat, and sell every single part of the animal. As a certified B-Corp, we do our best to work better and constantly consider the impact our work has on our partners, employees and community. By working with HVM, chefs and their customers get to enjoy delicious cuts of ethically raised, local meat and contribute to the growth of a better meat supply chain.

Job description

About The Position
HVM is seeking a full-time Operations Manager who’s passionate about local food, sustainably raised meat, and regional food systems to join its team. The Operations Manager will report directly to the owner and supervise one operations team member. This position will focus on building a systems-driven operations department that manages our supply chain from livestock forecasts to standing inventory to internal and outbound logistics. The ideal candidate is driven to make a difference, comfortable blazing new trails, unafraid to question the status quo, and able to balance day-to-day activities with long-term planning and analysis. The Operations Manager will be a key point of contact for our processing partners and therefor needs to have the overall vision as well as attention to detail that makes the sum of our collective work greater than the individual parts. HVM’s small but mighty five-person team is distributed around the northeast region and works mostly in a remote structure. This role, however, will require regular visits to our processing and farming partners’ locations in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland.

  • Establishing, improving, and/or monitoring key performance indicators to measure the effectiveness of operational processes
  • Inventory management and forecasting of raw materials and packaging supplies

  • Establishing and enforcing quality control standards to ensure the delivery of high-quality products and services
  • Managing one direct report with tasks, goal setting, performance review, and growth
  • Developing and tracking personal and departmental goals
  • Participate in regular meetings with the HVM team to analyze performance and plan for the future
  • Develop and present to the HVM team on the company’s operational performance

Qualifications
  • 5-10 years in food industry operations with at least 5 years of experience related to meat operations, processing, products, or sales
  • Passion for sustainable meat, local farms, good food, and the food business
  • Experience building operating systems built around success metrics, quality assurance, food safety, and resiliency
  • Strong continual improvement mindset
  • Outstanding people skills, conversational skills, diplomacy, and outcome-oriented problem solving skills
  • Excellent abilities to organize, follow-up, prioritize, multi-task, and organize
  • Strong capacity for big-picture systems thinking as well as hand-on, detailed work
  • Coachability, interest in getting feedback and dedication to consistent improvement
  • Enthusiastic about working with a small team that wears many hats in order to grow
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort with direct and open communication
