Job description
Equal Opportunity Employer Statement: Dutchess Outreach is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, genetic information, pregnancy, or any other protected characteristic as outlined by federal, state, or local laws. This policy applies to all employment practices within our organization, including hiring, recruiting, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, leave of absence, compensation, benefits, training, and apprenticeship.
About the program: Dutchess Outreach, through a grant awarded by NYS Department of Ag & Markets, is seeking a staff member to research and create a database of New York State-based growers considered “socially disadvantaged” from whom food access organizations (such as Dutchess Outreach) can purchase locally-grown produce for the benefit of food insecure community members.
There is a lack of a centralized repository of contact information of farmers who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, Veterans or members of other protected classes. Researching, collecting and aggregating this data will be helpful in creating long-term contractual relationships which would be a benefit to the entire food system. Once created, Dutchess Outreach would share this aggregated knowledge with other NYS food pantries - expanding and strengthening connections between socially disadvantaged growers and the food insecure community members though purchasers/distribution sites.
About the position: Reports to the Director of Operations & Advocacy. Typical hours of operation are 8:30am - 4:00pm Monday - Friday. Hybrid, primarily remote work schedule.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Explore, network and make inquiries to ‘socially disadvantaged’ farms in NYS
- Contact potential farm participants to discuss the project and ask if they would like to be included
- Create a general description of the products offered and contact information
- Develop, test, improve, distribute and maintain the database
Skills
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.
- Database development
- Background in social justice, food system research and sustainable agriculture
- Familiarity with New York State farming communities, practices and geography
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work within deadlines relating to grants and appeals
- Team-oriented and with a highly collaborative style
- Takes initiative and familiar with working a small team
- Strong preference for an individual who identifies as being in a protected class
Contract Duration: This is a one year, non-exempt part time position with benefits, through November 2024.
Compensation: 26 hours per week, at $20-23 per hour, plus pro-rated benefits based on the full-time equivalent.
