HEX Ferments has spent the last 10 years cultivating relationships with local growers and producers, educating others about the importance of incorporating fermented foods into our diets, supporting local and regenerative agriculture and inspiring others to make their own and /or start their own fermented foods businesses.

By supporting both the growers we source from and our local communities, HEX Ferments acts as a vital link in the local food supply chain.

HEX Superette, a unique tasting room and local market in Baltimore's Govans neighborhood, is seeking a Market Host to provide exceptional guest experiences and support our mission of promoting local, healthy, and sustainable food. This role involves welcoming guests, assisting them in navigating the market’s diverse food and beverage offerings, and fostering a sense of community.  HEX Superette aims to foster a sense of community. By taking an active, genuine interest in our guests and making them feel appreciated for their business, the Market Host is essential to the team's collective contribution of creating a warm and welcoming environment.

Key Responsibilities of the Market Host
  • Welcoming Guests: You are often the first point of contact for our guests, and your initial responsibility is to warmly welcome and introduce them to the Superette and the diverse range of food, drinks and products we carry. Your role involves helping guests navigate the store with a spirit of discovery. This requires patience, active listening, and the ability to guide them on their exploration of often new and intriguing items.
  • Communicating the Superette's Goal: You play a pivotal role in conveying HEX Superette's primary goal: to bring people together and provide them with a deeper connection to their local food system. 
  • Passion for Local Food: Being passionate about local food and its diverse offerings is essential. To assist guests effectively, you must be well-versed in the products within the market. This includes understanding the key attributes such as; their sources, methods of production, especially for items like ferments, produce, cheeses and meats. You will receive training on the items we carry. 
  • POS Checkout:  You’ll check out guests' purchases, handle order pickups, weigh products, answer questions, and bag their items. We currently use Shopify as our Point of Sale system.
  • Visual Merchandising: Together with management and the owners, you maintain the Superette market's appearance, ensuring fully stocked and organized shelves. Creating dynamic displays of fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods that align with established aesthetics.
  • Inventory Management: In addition to assisting guests, you handle inventory-related tasks such as placing and receiving orders and keeping the POS system clean and organized.  This includes taking product photos and entering details into the POS. You’ll help to cultivate and strengthen relationships with our suppliers.
  • Special Events: You may be called upon to assist at events held at HEX Superette. Such as chef dinners, workshops, on-site catered events and more!

 

Qualities of the Ideal Candidate:
  • Customer Service Experience: A background in retail and customer service is highly valued, as it equips you with the skills needed to engage with and assist our guests effectively.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Adaptability, patience, flexibility, and reliability are crucial in this new establishment, where you'll work closely with hands-on owners daily.
  • Aesthetic Sensibility: You take pride in making things look appealing and understand the importance of dynamic and attractive product displays.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handling guest issues and complaints with objectivity and professionalism is part of the role.
  • Culinary and/or Bartending Experience: Experience in kitchens and/or bars, including food prep, food handling safety, and recipe creation, bar backing and/or bartending is a definite plus, reflecting your passion for the food and beverage world. 
  • Leadership and Growth: This role has great potential for growth. Having a leadership mindset, great attitude, flexibility/adaptability will take you far in this role!

 

Working Conditions:
  • Physical Demands: The role requires standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, climbing, and operating equipment.
  • Mental Demands: Multitasking, problem-solving, communication, organization, evaluation, planning, and coordination.
  • Environmental Conditions: The job includes both indoor and outdoor settings, exposure to various temperatures, and working around people, sometimes in a loud environment. There may also be exposure to cleaning chemicals, as well as a kitchen that handles various food items.

 

Compensation: 
  • $18 per hour (plus tips for some special events)
  • Paid every week via direct deposit on Fridays
  • After 90 days: Paid Time Off (PTO) accrued at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, 5 days paid sick leave, renews every year on hire date 
  • 25% discount on all items in the HEX Superette
