Saco River Farms is a family run Farms and Natural Foods Market based in the Saco River valley region of Southern Maine. Our farms supply fresh foods to our Natural Food Market in Steep Falls, Maine and growing list of wholesale customers. We are a licensed Maine Goat Dairy.

Job description

Saco River Farms is expanding and we need additional team members at our growing farm in Steep Falls, Maine. We are looking for hard working people passionate about farming, sustainability, local food, dairy and cheese making.

Primary duties will be assisting in cheese making and other dairy items, packing orders, milking goats, farm chores,  cheese maintenance, dish washing, and cleaning.

Ideal candidates will be excited to learn all the roles on our farm so they can step in and cover for other teammates and or supervise as needed. Secondary activities include: making wholesale deliveries, running errands, retail operations, inventory & sales. Construction/trade related skills are a plus.

Supervisory positions are available depending on experience and we offer many options for career development and advancement.

Position is 20-40 hours/week depending on the candidate but some paid overtime hours may be necessary in the busy season (April – September). Our dairy  is seasonal so work slows down in the winter, we don’t generally milk or make cheese in January and February. Work picks back up in March for kidding season.

Saco River Farms Goat Dairy Assistant/supervisor position requirements:

Must love and be comfortable working with farm animals/small livestock. This is a physical job as such candidates with physical limitations may not be able to complete all tasks needed. This position requires someone who can lift 50 lbs regularly.

Candidates must understand that this is a serious job for serious people. Caring for animals requires a strong sense of commitment and the right candidate will be punctual, disciplined, hard working and flexible.

• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of goats and experience working with dairy animals.
• Must have experience working on a farm, preferably a goat farm. Willing to train exceptional candidates with limited goat farm experience.
• Must be familiar with all aspects of job responsibilities.
• Ability to work independently and with other co-workers.
• Sound judgment and commitment to sustainable farm values.
• A two or four-year degree in a related field is preferable but not required. On –farm experience may be substituted for education and is generally more important than extensive academic training.

Starting pay is $15/hour. Position is open until filled.
