Company description
We are a certified organic, diversified farm growing veggies for our CSA membership of about 350. CSA shares are rounded out with berries, melons, pick-your-own flowers, and herbs. Our 25 acre farm is located within a 100-acre open space preserve in the rolling hills of Bucks County, PA. It is the longest running CSA in Bucks County. We are committed stewards of the land always looking for ways to better our farming practices. In addition to establishing 7 acres of permanent pollinator habitat and planting native perennials and trees annually, we clear invasive species regularly from the surrounding mature woods, have created permanent waterways to divert excess water from our clay-rich fields, and have restored two onsite historic buildings from disrepair. We rely on cover-cropping, compost application, and a 3-year rotational planting schedule to help improve soil health and fertility. There are five tunnels for season extension and sensitive crop production in addition to our propagation greenhouse. We have a small flock of laying hens and recently incorporated Romeldale sheep into our farm system. Serving our community by growing healthy, nutrient rich foods and caring for the land which those foods come from is a joy and privilege!
Job description
Over the course of a growing season our Field Crew gains the full experience of operating a diversified organic vegetable farm from start to finish. Staff begins the season seeding in the propagation greenhouse and flipping tunnel space for early season crops. As conditions warm work moves outdoors building trellising for peas, transplanting growing seedlings, and preparing bed space for future crops. Cultivating established crops and harvesting are routine tasks through the weeks of summer.
Once harvests begin, farm staff manage share distribution in the barn on a rotating basis, washing and stocking the pick-up room and interacting with CSA members. Leading workshifts with CSA members in the field is another regular task once warm weather sets in. Having an on-site pick up and workshifts for membership contributes to the uniquely strong connection our members have with the farm and to our low member turnover rate. The work week is typically 40 hours with days beginning around 7 or 8 am depending on the time of year. Our smallish crew of 4-6 works closely together and we strive to promote an environment of support and encouragement. Bringing a harvest season to a successful completion together is a profoundly rewarding experience.
