Job description
Vegetable Crew Member at Essex Farm
About the Farm:
Essex Farm in Essex, NY is a 500+ acre diversified farm in the Champlain Valley of upstate New York. Our mission is to provide a full diet for our local and regional CSA members all year round. We raise pastured livestock; operate a 20-head raw dairy; and grow a wide variety of fresh and storage vegetables. We process our dairy, boil maple syrup, ferment vegetables, make soap and butcher meat all right here on the farm. We are a fast-paced and dynamic organization entering our 22nd year.
This season we are growing 15 acres of vegetables using tractors, hand tools, drainage, cover crops, old agricultural systems and new ones. The farm owners, Mark and Kristin Kimball, bring decades of food production knowledge and in-depth experience with the infrastructure and land here at the farm. The younger leaders on our vegetable team are excited about honing their skills, learning from their mistakes, and sharing their excitement for diversified farming.
A majority of the work is done by hand. Crew members will be expected to prioritize efficiency, have attention to detail, be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and be able to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly. Weekly tasks include harvesting, weeding, washing, packing, seeding, and tractor cultivation.
For the summer of 2025 we are seeking applicants with tractor driving experience, as well as a basic understanding of veg production and weed control. The ideal candidate will be proficient with working alone and with others, occasionally taking the lead on routine tasks. Our vegetable system is deeply intertwined with the livestock operation, which allows the unique opportunity for veg team members to work alongside our livestock, milking and dairy processing staff.
We are looking to add people to our vegetable team who are hardworking, joyful, and as excited to farm as we are!
