Main Street Cheese, LLC is a small-scale, woman-owned, licensed goat dairy committed to the craft of cheesemaking.  It is inspired by both a devotion to artisanal production as well as a conviction that local, sustainable agriculture can help to usher in a new, life-centered, generative economy through consumer and citizen action.  Its herd of Alpine does live up the road from the cheesery, where they have plentiful browse.  After kidding season, the kids are raised on Main Street, where people are welcome to visit them.  Main Street Cheese sells its fresh and aged cheeses and goat meat directly to people at its honor-system shop on Main Street in Hancock, New Hampshire.  It is also available at local shops and farmers markets.

Job description

Main Street Cheese is seeking a 20-30 hr. per week Goat Milker, with and in partial exchange for housing if desired.

Main Street Cheese is seeking an energetic and hard-working part-time Goat Milker/Cheesery Assistant who cares deeply for animal welfare and local agriculture. Great attentiveness to cleanliness and sanitary practices are essential.

Qualifications: Experience working with animals and on a farm is desired, though a committed and enthusiastic person wanting to learn is possible.

This position involves many aspects of goat care as well as some cheesemaking tasks. Duties will include: milking 12 does by machine (though hand milking must also be learned), feeding kids, mucking, getting goats out to pasture, dishwashing, packaging cheese, assisting cheesemaker when needed with cheesemaking, and other tasks.  

Compensation: $12/hr or housing plus stipend.

Start Date: As soon as possible.
