Through the Grassroots Growers Alliance, Purpose Built Schools Atlanta and the Paideia School Urban Agricutlure Program have partnered to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students through the school farm. The school farm program also provides fresh produce to the community in order to ensure equitable access to healthy food for all families.
Job description
During the 2018-19 School Year, Thomasville Heights Elementary School, in partnership with The Paideia School, established a school farm. As THES heads into Year 4, we are looking to hire a full-time garden-based educator to continue the growth of this important program.
Position Summary
The Garden-Based Educator will focus on the following areas:
- Hands-on farm-based learning: students grow, cook, and taste new foods, which builds their skills and healthy food preferences
- support student educational outcomes by drawing upon the National Agricultural Literacy Benchmarks and Outcomes (standards-based curriculum map for K-12 teachers)

What You’ll Do
Under the guidance of the Paideia School Urban Agriculture program, the Garden-based educator will work with students and teachers, both during and after school, with support from the Thomasville Heights Elementary School Farmer and the Farm to School Chef, to build healthy school food environments and support class curriculum.
- focus on teaching children in grades K-5 about food and agriculture by delivering engaging, hands-on lessons, integrating activities on the farm with core curriculum and working with teachers and school administrators to increase food and nutrition education in curricula, and more.
- help to grow healthy food with students, teachers, and community members on the school farm
- Work to create a dynamic educational setting where students can get their hands dirty and experience what they are learning first-hand
- work with the Farmer Educator to develop garden sustainability plans and unique farm-based classes that support curriculum
- work with the Farm to School Chef to positively impact what students are eating by promoting food grown on the school farm (and other local farms) through taste tests and cooking classes
- help build school wide cultures of health by building strong, collaborative relationships with teachers, families, and school administrators
- create farm-based curriculum that supports grade level outcomes
- help with program impact measurement

The Details:
- This position is renewable subject to satisfactory performance review and available funding.
- You must be available for 40 hours each week, M-F, during the school year
Garden-based educators are expected to abide by rules of conduct set forth by Purpose Built Schools Atlanta and will be evaluated for performance twice during the term: at the mid-point and end of the year performance is evaluated based on progress toward achieving goals set forth in your job description as well as general professional conduct in the service environment.
