Urban Oaks Organic Farm is a 3+ acre non-profit inner city farm with six renovated greenhouses. For nearly 12 years, the farm has operated year round, growing award winning certified organic produce primarily greens, herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and specialty crops. Our produce (supplemented with other local organic farms’ products) is sold wholesale to some of the best restaurants and specialty stores in CT and retail, directly to the public(WIC and SNAP accepted), in both our year round on site farm store and in our winter and summer CSA shares.For more information and pictures, please go to Urban Oaks FB pages and/or www.blog.urbanoaks.org.

Urban Oaks Organic Farm is now accepting applications for a part-time Farm Based Educator currently funded for three afternoons per week Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays(3-5pm) to work with 2nd--5th graders and year 2 of our summer educational enrichment program on Monday through Thursday afternoons. Summer 2012 schedule is July 9th-August 9th, 12:30-3:30. The focus will be on seasonal growing and vermiculture using texts, workbooks, literacy and numeracy work sheets and the farm’s resources, including a new community teaching garden to be installed in June 2012.

The position is a contract, non-staff position; spring start date is negotiable. Compensation is $16-18/hour which includes 10-12 hours/week during the school year and 16-18 hours/wk in the summer program. Qualifications:
  • BS/BA in environmental education, agriculture, natural science or related field is preferred(may substitute associate degree with relevant experience) along with prior experience on a working farm or nature center.
  • Previous work with elementary school age children and a positive, outgoing approach are necessary as well as the ability to work collaboratively with other farm staff and to direct, motivate, and inspire inner city students and their parents.
  • Basic computer skills necessary; experience with a Flip camera and Movie Maker a plus.
