Edible Schoolyard Kern County is growing!!!  The Mobile Kitchen Classroom allows us to take our edible education program to offsite locations like Boys & Girls Club, local Farmer's Markets, and local elementary schools.  Imagine going to a farmers market and shopping for fresh locally grown, seasonal produce.  Then taking that produce and showing the market attendees how they can make an easy, delicious, healthy dish.  We share the recipe and samples!!


Duties and Responsibilities:

(Include but are not limited to)

  • Will be responsible for driving a van to and from events.  Will load and unload van, deliver lesson, return van to home site, clean and ready van and tools used for next event
  • Maintains the order and cleanliness of the MKC as stated in the MKC handbook and by utilizing kitchen maintenance schedules
  • Must be familiar with health department rules and stay up to date on regulations
  • Follows all Standard Operating Procedures for the MKC
  • Keeps control of equipment, inventory and supplies when at offsite locations
  • Involved in the preparation and delivery of kitchen (or cooking) classes, guiding students through lesson and recipe execution and clean up
  • Remains familiar with both the curriculum and the current harvest in the garden, to ensure preparedness to teach the kitchen classes 
  • Will be involved in scheduling the MKC at off site partner locations and for maintaining MKC Calendar on Google 
  • Collaborates with the Lead MKC Educator on the execution of grade appropriate kitchen skills, activities and lessons 
  • Coordinate with Kitchen staff on the use of dish-washing station, washer/dryer, refrigerator, freezer, and pantry
  • Helps plan and execute offsite lessons 
  • Helps train staff and/or volunteers at partner locations to assist with facilitating lessons 
  • Attends garden walk-throughs at BVESY (Buena Vista Edible Schoolyard) to become familiar with seasonal produce/crops ready to be harvested and used in lessons
  • Maintains MKC, Charlie Cart, and trailer inventory
  • Participate in the production and filming of online education videos
  • Assist ESYKC Kitchen Administrator with planning and execution of ESYKC community events (i.e.; evening cooking classes, luncheons, team building events)
 

MKC Staff Will:

  • Participate in the, set up, implementation, teaching, and break down of daily lessons and activities 
  • Maintain MKC, Charlie Carts, facilities and equipment
  • Substitute teach or participate as needed in the Edible Schoolyard kitchen/garden classroom or other ESYKC partner sites. 
  • Attend and participate in all appropriate BVESY staff meetings, garden walk-throughs and scheduled ESYKC professional development days. 
 

Community:

  • Assists in planning and executing Annual Plant Sale, Summer Camps, and fundraising activities
  • Will be the ESYKC “face” in the community and with community partners (KC Farm, BCSD, Farmers Markets, etc.)
  • Maintain healthy relationship with GFEF and ESYKC Staff, and community partners  
  • Represent ESYKC program to wider community (i.e.: giving tours of ESY, public speaking engagements, off site community events)
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently 
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate with co-workers and elementary school children in an educational environment
  • Ability to interact positively and effectively with a variety of constituents including parents, teachers, volunteers and visitors
  • Ability to maintain order and safe working practices in a kitchen setting with young students
  • Knowledge of effective and efficient kitchen techniques and health department requirements
  • Attention to detail a must to maintain aesthetic of environment
  • Ability to take direction and work on a variety of tasks simultaneously 
  • Must be able to work evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays.
  • Bilingual preferred
 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree preferred 
  • Experience in a culinary or kitchen setting
  • Experience working with young students preferred 
  • Educational experience in related fields preferred
  • Valid Class C CDL
  • Clean driving record 
 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to safely operate large van
  • Ability to unload heavy carts (utilizing a winch) and other equipment from MKC (Charlie Carts weigh 450 pounds on wheels)
  • Ability to work with frequent interruption 
  • Ability to stand, stoop, reach and bend
  • Ability to grasp and manipulate small and large objects
  • Ability to read small print
  • Ability to taste, smell and feel to determine quality of food
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work with and near electrical and other equipment

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
