Job description
Monkshood Nursery began as a potted herb nursery in 2001 and has since become a thriving 82 acre parcel of land for growing vegetables for farmers markets and a CSA . Its a beautiful place in Stuyvesant, New York and may be your future place of employment! All certified organic, the farm focuses on high value, high quality greenhouse greens ( spinach, salad mix, braising greens) as well as organic potted culinary and medicinal herbs, vegetable starts and greenhouse tomatoes. We sell at Farmers markets in the Hudson Valley as well as in NYC Greenmarket. With 6 acres in cultivation, and 10 greenhouses the farm offers a diversity of produce and the chance to work with experienced grower David Rowley.Summer Interns sought. There are 2 positions available for summer. Positions start immediately. Please send letter of interest and C.V. with work experience and background information. If you have agricultural references please include with your letter. Compensation. These positions are for 5-day a week fieldwork, harvesting greens, washing/bunching, greenhouse work, various animal chores. The positions would be best for a couple who can live together in the housing provided by the farm with modest kitchen, and beautiful location. The farm offers laundry, room + board, hot shower, river swims, $400/ month stipend and all the vegetables you can eat. It is a perfect opportunity for those with some experience in growing who are looking for full-time immersion into commercial horticulture, and particularly experience working with hoop houses. We work 7am to 4 pm, with a break for lunch. It is a jolly team and a glorious setting.
Educational experience nearby: Hawthorn Valley Farmscape Ecology Program and Farm Beginnings Program, Lower Hudson Valley CRAFT program,. About you: You should: Have a strong interest & some experience in organic/ sustainable agriculture, be physically capable of manual work ( harvesting, planting, weeding, carrying produce etc.) and a self-motivated, amiable teamate. You should have the ability to be able to work a farmers market booth, especially as from may thru june we have alot of Plant sales that Monkshood attends, and we will need extra help for those markets, and possibly more as the vegetable harvests pick up. It would be my hope that these folk, in addition to the existing staff, would be able to work together for the big harvest days, and then break apart and manage each of their departments as tasks dictate.
Thanks, and I look forwards to eating with you.... David @ Monkshood Nursery. Located right on the Hudson River, 20 minutes north of scenic Hudson NY ( which takes 2 hours on Amtrak to NYC Penn Station), this farm is very accessible in the heart of beautiful Columbia County.
