Job description
Zephyr Farm, a 6+ acre farm in Cranston, RI, is seeking an assistant for the 2019 season. We grow mixed veggies and have a layer flock of 500 chickens. We farm in 2 locations that are 3 miles apart.
I am seeking a can do kind of person to assist in all aspects of the farm, but most importantly seek someone with construction skills, tractor experience, and mechanical know how.
As for construction, we currently have several building projects happening that will need finishing and always have simple building projects going on. Construction can mean anything from a simple go fix the hoophouse door to lets build a lean to on the barn. Must be comfortable with hand and power tools. Construction projects may include improvements to the farmhouse.
As for tractor experience, I need someone comfortable on a tractor, as we own several. I am seeking someone comfortable driving on the road as we often take the tractor back and forth from the 2 locations. The person must understand how to safely operate a tractor and put on and take off implements safely.
As for mechanical know how I am not expecting someone who can rebuild an engine but someone who can trouble shoot and get small engines off and running.
The goal of the farm is constant improvement and organization. I need a person who is good at problem solving, able to use what is available on the farm to fix and build things, and is an excellent time manager. This person will also be part of the farm crew and will participate in day-to-day farm operations. Someone who can see the entire picture yet complete the project at hand and also see the needs of the future. You will not necessarily be running a crew. The assistant and myself must see eye to eye and understand one another. This person must take direction and be able to work independently yet be open enough to ask for help when needed. Must be able to work in a fast paced (no idle hands) environment and take some of the burden of running the farm off my shoulders. Start date is potentially late march or early April and will be fulltime. The position can run year round if the right candidate is found. Pay commensurate with experience but somewhere in the $13-$15/hr range plus veggies and eggs.
