Certified Organic Vegetable farm going into our
10th season in the rolling hills of Eastern PA. We grow 40+ varieties of produce on 25 acres for our Philadelphia Farmers Markets, our 400 member CSA, and our Wholesale accounts. We strive to be efficient on the farm, to have fun, to work hard, to build crew comradery, and to grow delicious, beautiful , and bountiful organic produce. Job description
Join Taproot Farm! We are welcoming applications for various positions on our Certified Organic produce farm. Come join our excellent team: be a part of the sustainable agriculture movement and learn how to farm on a highly productive farm! We offer competitive wages and community atmosphere.
Field Production Team:
The Field Production Team prepares the land and grows the crops from seeding to harvest. This includes a wide range of agricultural activities:
- Working in our greenhouses with seedlings and tomato crops
- Transplanting crops in the field
- Installing row covers, irrigation and other growing aids
- Irrigation
- Cultivating weeds, hand and hoe weeding crops
- Field maintenance: mowing, trimming, etc.
- Pruning, trellising
- Tractor work (if applicable)
The Field Production Team is a skilled group of highly motivated individuals who love the outdoors, love working with their hands, and love the successes and challenges of a productive farm season. The Field Production Crew also may overlap with harvest activities. Join the Team!
Harvest and Packhouse Crew:
The Harvest and Packhouse Crew harvests, cleans and organizes Taproot Farm produce for distribution. The Harvest and Packhouse Crew will learn to be proficient at the careful and quick harvest and packing of a range of crops, including:
- Tomatoes
- Strawberries
- Blueberries
- Greens
- Root Crops
- Potatoes
The harvest and packhouse crew works with an emphasis on quality and productivity, ensuring timely harvest and distribution. The Packhouse Crew will wash, sort, pack and organize the produce for distribution to our CSA, Farmers’ Markets and Wholesale accounts. Harvesters and Packhouse workers are quick, meticulous, and organized. They are a productive and responsible groups that loves the outdoors and getting down to work picking, sorting and packing beautiful produce.
Greenhouse Manager:
The Greenhouse Manager is in charge of growing the seedlings and microgreens in our nursery as well as attending to the various needs of our high tunnel crops. They perform regular schedules of irrigation and ventilation and they execute the Seeding Plan. The Greenhouse Manager must have an attentiveness to detail and a strong background in horticulture. They work under the guidance of Farmer George to grow all the seedlings for the field.
Packhouse Manager:
The Packhouse Manager is the main orchestrator of produce coming into the packhouse for washing and distribution. They maintain the steady flow of produce from field to final storage, working to preserve quality and freshness. The packhouse manager thinks strategically and has a penchant for organization.They coordinate inventory, keep a clean workspace, emphasize food safety and delegate to the other crew members to tackle larger orders for our CSA and wholesale customers.
Farmers’ Market Crew:
Our Farmers’ Market Crew is the lively force responsible for the beautiful display and high sales at our year-round farmers’ markets. They use their positive energy and marketing skills to sell our Organic produce to market customers, many of whom we’ve been serving for almost 10 years. The Farmers’ Market Manager must be able to travel to Philadelphia in a box truck or cargo van; be able to lift moderate weight; be motivated to sell and engage customers; be attentive to detail and customer needs; have a working knowledge of Organic produce and it’s uses; be passionate about Organic produce & customer service; and be highly dependable. Taproot Farm attends 3 markets per week. They require long and exciting market days twice per week. Non-smokers only.
Delivery Driver:
Taproot Farm’s delivery driver distributes our CSA share to over 20 locations every Wednesday and Thursday and brings produce to New York City once a week. They must have a clean driving record, an attention to detail, ability to drive a large vehicle in a city, move quick at each delivery site, and have a positive and friendly attitude. Requires early mornings. Non-smokers only.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $12.15 - $15.00
