Company description

Here at the Pantry, we like to call ourselves a community kitchen. For us, that means we do many things: cooking classes that focus on traditional food crafts and technique, five-course family-style dinners, culinary camps for the kids, power lunches for makers who are itching to enter the food industry, food swaps for people who like their cooking time to be social, and cookbook-club potluck suppers, where we pick a cookbook that we're excited about and invite everyone to cook from its recipes. Basically anything we can think of to get our neighbors around the table, breaking bread and building community. We opened in 2011 and are located in the neighborhood of Ballard in Seattle.

Job description

Cooking/Teaching:

- Teach 6-9 classes (1-2 topics) each month. Develop class topics, menus, recipes, and timelines.

- Cook for monthly family dinners. Develop menus and recipes, and direct staff.

- Lead quarterly Food Swaps. Develop menus and recipes, and direct staff.

Management / Other Fun Stuff:

- Manage monthly family dinners. Make sure all recipes are developed and ordering notes are complete within the timeframe given. Coordinating with our other chefs to ensure they meet deadlines.

- Be at ease with frequent email communication, filling out spreadsheets, and formatting google documents.

- Provide a phenomenal customer experience through email, phone, and in-person interaction.

- You will be doing a little bit of everything to keep the Pantry running smoothly. There’s the little stuff too, like putting away 50-pound bags of flour, organizing the walk-in and storage, and attending regular staff meetings.

- Get to know our community through cooking, eating, and learning together!

Timeline and Schedule:

- Begin November. There is a steep learning curve to this position, so the first two months of the job will be training, with the expectation of 20-30 hours per week. Transition to desired schedule in January, when you get your sea legs. Stay forever.

- Varying hours and days, including weekends. Most of the shifts will be in the evening.

Pay:

- Part-time or full-time position paid hourly. Annual salary range between $40,000-$60,000, depending on how many classes you’d like to teach each month. Includes retirement benefits, healthcare option, and sick days. Bonus: so much good food!

Personality:

- We are looking for someone who is social, friendly, articulate, and open to a flexible schedule. A highly organized person who can prioritize between multiple tasks in a busy work environment while still maintaining attention to detail. Someone who is comfortable solving problems without direct supervision. Excellent grammar is a must. A unicorn.

Experience:

- Since the Pantry is a unique place, we don’t expect you to have direct experience for every aspect of the position. That being said, we are looking for someone with professional culinary training. We are also looking to see a trajectory on your resume, so we can see how the Pantry would be your perfect next home. The position is both administrative and culinary, so we’re looking for someone with an interest in both areas. We strongly encourage people with experience in social justice work to apply.

Compensation
