Job description

Our Farms & Food Projects Development program exists to help grow the Kansas City local food system through providing technical assistance, training, networking and support services to local farms and food projects.  The program manager engages with a wide variety of people who are starting, operating, and growing farms and community-based food projects and is charged with assisting them in realizing their goals while helping to develop a diverse and strong local food system. 


Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • One-to-one technical assistance to farmers and food projects, sometimes under grant contracts that need specific management and reporting systems;
  • Creation and maintenance of peer-to-peer learning opportunities through a cadre approach;
  • Development of workshops and other learning opportunities on topics that are identified by program users and through active engagement with the local food system;
  • Development and implementation of an educational initiative on farming and climate change;
  • Management of several direct services: community greenhouse, bulk orders to help farmers realize bulk prices, mini-grants, and others as may be developed; and
  • Development and management of program budget, preparation of board reports, and maintenance of program documents and record keeping systems.

Placement Criteria

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field or a suitable combination of education and relevant experience preferred;
  • Demonstrated program management and mentoring/ educational skills;
  • Ability to prioritize workflow, organize diverse material and handle multiple priorities;
  • Strong commitment to establishing long-term relationships with program participants involving mentorship and support;
  • Knowledge of common concepts, practices, and procedures within a non-profit organization;
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with diverse populations, including farmers, non-profit staff/ leadership, funders, and others, particularly across racial, ethnic, economic, and cultural differences.

Compensation

this position is: salaried, less than 50k
