Grow Ohio Valley is nationally recognized nonprofit, building thriving communities through local food. We operate five farm sites, including an urban apple orchard, two high tunnel greenhouses, and a geothermal hothouse, all on urban vacant lots in a hard-up neighborhood.
We operate a range of creative sales-models to bring this locally grown product to food deserts, with a focus on building economic opportunities for local family farms. 
Complementary educational programs teach community members gardening skills, how to prepare healthy meals, and the importance of eating fresh produce. With these efforts, we hope to fashion a new economic landscape, one offering increased prosperity, improved health, and a better environment!

Job description

We are seeking a capable and committed store manager to launch the Public Market: a year-round non-profit farmers market and natural food store opening in the heart of downtown Wheeling. 


This innovative consignment market will eliminate a USDA-classified food desert while growing opportunities for regional farmers.

The manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the market, including:

  • Coordinating with producers and making wholesale orders
  • Overseeing two additional market staff
  • Tracking sales via POS system
  • Distributing payment to producers
  • Creating weekly sales reports
  • Coordinating special events and educational activities (product sampling, cooking demos, art displays, etc)

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
  • Proactive, positive, and problem-solving approach to tackling new challenges and identifying creative solutions.
  • Desire to help develop, implement and improve store and staff systems.
  • Commitment to increasing access to fresh, healthy, and local food and creating agricultural opportunity in the region.
  • Responsible, organized and adaptable. Possessing clear communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in agriculture, especially food safety, post-harvest handling, pricing, marketing, and display.
  • Ability to coordinate and conduct outreach among and across diverse populations.
  • Retail and management experience preferred.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, under $15/hr
