Job description
POSITION SUMMARYThe Culinary/Healthy Eating and Wellness Instructor is primarily responsible for facilitating the Culinary Training Program – GROW. The Gaining Resources and Opportunities for Work (GROW) program is an 8-week culinary arts job training course providing a comprehensive introduction to the food service industry. The Culinary Instructor is responsible for providing students enrolled in this training program 200 hours of classroom instruction and culinary skills practice, connecting youth to work directly in established commercial kitchens as interns, and facilitating the mentorship and ongoing relationship with some of the East Bay’s most talented chefs. The 8-week GROW program takes place bi-annually, in the late summer/fall and early spring seasons, with ongoing internship and employment placements beyond the 8 week cohorts.
The instructor will also be responsible for promoting and facilitating healthy eating practices with youth in all programs and services throughout the year. This is done in part through facilitating Healthy Eating and Wellness workshops throughout the agency, including in ILP and Housing programming, as well as coordinating and maintaining the gardening program at one of the offsite residential houses B:E maintains.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Plan and facilitate Culinary training course for two GROW cohorts per fiscal year. This includes but is not limited to the following:
GROW Program set up and clean up
Direct classroom instruction, both with youth in groups and ability in one-on-one meetings
Food and supply shopping for GROW culinary training program
Ability to lead and manage offsite field trips for culinary artisan/youth, including shopping trips to purchase appropriate clothing and cooking tools
Teaching and monitoring Food Safety standards
Organizing and keeping the kitchen clean and up to food handling standards
Ordering kitchen and GROW supplies as needed on an ongoing basis with assistance from Operations division
Ability to develop and foster relationships with local restaurants and other culinary partners
In partnership with colleagues, participate in curriculum development and workshop facilitation
GROW Program Evaluation, including data entry and analysis of best practices and areas of improvement
Assessment of youth culinary skills with staff for placement with local employers
• Recruit, screen, and orient local restaurants and other culinary businesses to serve as employer partners for the GROW program
• In partnership with GROW Coordinator, co-create a training environment that is engaging and accessible to participants with varying levels of education and experience
• Provide individualized culinary skills and employment coaching and support for all youth in the GROW program, including post-program coaching as needed
• Meet individually with 16-20 youth in the Housing Program for coaching on cooking, healthy and inexpensive food shopping, and general nutrition and wellness.
• Co-manage GROW-Oakland Farm with Farm Manager as it relates to planting foods to be used/cooked during healthy eating workshops.
• Strong teaching, facilitation and group management skills
• Understanding of and commitment to social and food justice
• Passion for building community and deep relationships through food
• Develop and facilitate Healthy Eating and Wellness Workshops series in the Independent Living Program, Housing Divisions and in Readiness programming
• Facilitate and manage gardening program/workshops at the Parenting House, one of B:E’s residential offsite houses. This includes yearly planting, harvesting and workshops on cooking the food that is grown from the garden
• Manage catering for in-house events and some outside events with GROW youth
• Integrate CCRW coaching model into curriculum and use coaching model to empower youth
• Represent Beyond Emancipation at community meetings and events, with a focus on food justice and the culinary field
• Participate in organization-wide meetings and trainings
• 24-48-hour data entry in Apricot database system turnaround time required
• Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
• Degree or certification in Culinary Arts or a program with similar training AND a Serv Safe certification
• 3-5 years’ experience cooking in a restaurant or as a personal chef
• 3-5 years’ experience working directly with transition age youth in culinary training or food justice is a plus
• 2-5 years’ experience working with at-risk, underserved populations; experience with the child welfare system is a plus
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a member of a team, and with a wide variety of stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, and other community-based organizations
• Clean driving record, consistently maintained, and reliable personal transportation
As mandated by Community Care Licensing (CCL), an offer of employment for this position will be contingent upon successful completion of a background check, including fingerprinting. The successful applicant will also have TB test clearance, possess a valid California driver's license, and maintain a clean DMV record.
