Company description
We wild ferment our vegetables in our light-filled pickle factory located in Ivy City, DC. Our pickles are fermented the traditional way with simple ingredients -- vegetables, spices, salt and some time or pickled in Virginia sourced apple cider vinegar. We take a nod from the seasons as our pickle lineup changes throughout the year.
In 2012, a brother sister team started Number 1 Sons with $500. We're proud to now serve 75,000 annual customers with our quality pickles. We're excited to keep growing our business with folks who have a similar gusto for hard work and quality food.
Job description
We spend our days washing, chopping and mixing vegetables. We then allow them to ferment in our barrels before packing them for local farmers markets and stores. Most of our work is done by hand. We maintain a clean work environment and cap each day’s production schedule by cleaning and preparing the space together for the next day’s work.
As part of our production team, you will be involved in making kimchi, sauerkrauts, pickles and other fermented foods at every step of production from washing and preparing the vegetables to analysing and adjusting active ferments to packing them for farmers markets and stores. If you are interested in kombucha production, you can also be involved in this.
If interested in also working farmers markets, we have weekday and weekend farmers market shifts available. The right pickler could do a combination of both kitchen and farmers market work. There is some flexibility here!
Qualifications
- Heart and ownership; you are proud of the work you do and take pride in doing the whole job. From setup to cleanup, you jump in and do/help with what needs to be done.
- Improvement; you like finding ways to do things better. Individually and for the team. Change is an ongoing part of our small business. We love helping each other get better by figuring out how we can do better by the farmers/vendors we buy from, by our crew who produce and sell our products and by our customers and the friends/family they share our food with.
- Respectful; you come on time and are ready to work when the shift starts. You can listen to instructions and follow them. You treat our equipment and facility with thoughtfulness.
Schedule: 2-5 weekday shifts a week, 7:30am-4:00pm, minimum 30 minute meal break. One of your 5 shifts may need to be a pickle factory weekend shift depending on our market needs.
