Vittles Films produces character-driven documentaries told through the lens of food. Our projects examine contemporary social issues in the South and beyond, exploring how the food we seek and the way we eat it informs our identity, culture and community. Our first documentary feature, FARMER/VETERAN, premiered on PBS's INDEPENDENT LENS in 2017. Our contributors are seasoned journalists, innovative filmmakers and emerging food-system leaders. Together, we collaborate to create sustenance through storytelling.
Job description
We're seeking a contributing WRITER and RESEARCHER for a food-based documentary series being produced in Durham, North Carolina. "The Land Of Fish & Grits" aims to reinterpret the past and imagine the future of Southern food by centering its Black and Indigenous creators. This six part series will be guided in the flyest way possible by Justin Robinson - a seasoned botanist, an eccentric executive cook and a Grammy-winning musician (Carolina Chocolate Drops).
The contributing writer and researcher will develop story leads through original reporting, as well as conduct interviews and scholarly research. Ideal candidates will have a personal connection to African-American and Native American foodways along with previous experience writing for television or film. Experience writing for print journalism or editorial audiences is a must. Proficiency with Google suite and social media are also highly valued. Finally, we would prefer that applicants be currently living in or be willing to move near Durham, North Carolina.
Compensation & Timeframe: $600/wk (20 hrs/wk) for 12 weeks (July - Sept)
