We are moving to Ghirardelli Square this summer and opening a Cafe, Cheese Shop and Beer and Wine Retail and want a full-time Beer and Wine Buyer to join our team!
The Beer and Wine buyer works with the Education Coordinator, Executive Chef and General Manager to build a beer and wine inventory that is exciting to locals but also offers local options for tourists hoping to take home California’s best. They research, buy, and maintain inventory of wine, beer, and related merchandise. The buyer is also the key point of contact for vendors and retail staff. This role requires tenacious attention to detail in all facets of the job, strong and sometimes diplomatic communication skills, while maintaining a high level of work efficiency. It also requires excellent salesmanship.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
Responsible for wine, beer, and related merchandise purchasing, inventory and sales for shop, cafe, catering and classes:

- Creates and maintains an organized and properly rotated selection of the highest quality products, with a focus on sustainability and cheese/food friendliness, and a focus on local products to appeal to the tourist clientele
- Adapts selection to trends, customer preferences, sales data, marketing and educational initiatives
- Maintains COGS at 50% margin or lower and ensures pricing is accurate and up to date
- Maintains retail inventory documents
- Regularly researches distributor/supplier options, visits distributors and maintains existing relationships to ensure best pricing option and product selection
- Attends trade shows to stay current on trends within industry
- Procures hard-to-find and extraordinary products
- Creates signage and attractive displays and ensures all products have proper signage throughout shop
- Helps maintain and enhance the TCS aesthetic presentation of food and beverage service
- Assists customers looking for pairing options and beer and wine products to their taste but also educates customers enough to try things out of their comfort zone
- Implement strategic retail sales growth selling certain products related to classes, season, event, etc.
- Plans and helps execute promotions and events
- Have detailed knowledge of retail offerings and research potential new products that fit with current aesthetic/brand
- Maintain a standard and specials list for cafe, events and tasting classes
Lead staff educator of products and proper handling and storage:

- Trains all new-hires on current product selection, proper handling, storage, and service
- Ensures all new-hires complete wine training passport
- Ensures regular inventory and shelf cleaning
- Keep up to date on safety laws, regulations, and ingredient information
- Teaches public and private classes to customers
- Promotes and procures educational opportunities for staff
Contributes to the overall vision and culture of the company

Requirements:

- 1+ years experience in wine sales and purchasing
- A keen eye for retail display and merchandising to increase sales and improve overall customer experience
- Strong communication and project management skills
- Ability to work and communicate effectively, efficiently, and calmly in a fast-paced environment
- A natural desire to learn and educate others in the product
- Strong customer service skills
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Apps and electronic sales and inventory systems
Compensation and Benefits:
Work with a passionate team who love what they do! Full-Time position w/hourly wage DOE, sick leave pay according to SF law, cell phone stipend, commuter benefits, discounts on food and wine, access to The Cheese School classes. After 90 days: 50% health insurance covered by employer. After 1 year: 401k matched by employer and bonus plan.
