Member Position/Title: Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps Crew Leader

Estimated Start and End Date:  June 11- July 27, 2018

Civic Works, Inc. seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire high school students for the Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps (BCLC). Crew leaders will supervise and engage crew members in conservation activities at various sites throughout Baltimore.  Past locations have included: Clifton Park, Herring Run Park, Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, Civic Works’ Real Food Farm and community lots throughout Baltimore City.

 

Program Description:

Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps (BCLC) is a five-week summer leadership program that helps high school students from Baltimore City develop job skills, remain physically active, and learn more about the environment through a variety of conservation projects. BCLC members work throughout the city to improve our parks and gardens. Some crews work on hiking trails in city parks, repairing erosion damage and making them safer for hikers. Other crews work to create and improve Baltimore’s urban farms, gardens, and orchards. All crews do their part to remove litter from Baltimore’s green spaces and waterways. Once a week, all BCLC members gather together for an education day with topics ranging from stream ecology to financial literacy.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise crew members, facilitate worksite projects, and manage crew workers schedule.
  • Train and supervise crew members in the safe and proper use of tools and in all aspects of the daily service project (may include trail construction, maintenance, wildlife habitat work, site restoration, farm work etc.)
  • Manage administrative aspects of the crew including, but not limited to, required pre- and post-program paperwork, daily medical and work logs, and equipment inventories.
  • Plan for and carry out Environmental Education lessons.
  • Maintain relationship with agency partner including managing all logistical and operational work and how it relates to the partner, project, and coordinate interactions/trainings with the crew.
  • Manage a budget and necessary purchasing for crew and project.
  • Provide an emotionally and physically safe environment for crew.
  • Assist with tool and equipment logistics and maintenance.
  • Communicate with full time Civic Works field staff as required and as needed.
 

Qualifications:

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must have ability to legally work in the US
  • Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training: June 11 - June 22 2018
  • Must have a current First Aid & CPR certification by the start of the training
  • Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18). Teaching in an educational environment a plus
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred.
    •   i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, farming, and gardening
  • Ability to perform manual/physical labor for up to 8 hours per day while working outdoors, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Must live in or near Baltimore City and have familiarity with Baltimore City

Compensation

this position is: hourly, under $15/hr
