DC Greens, a non-profit organization that uses the levers of food education, food access, and food policy to advance food justice in the nation's capital, seeks a Community Engagement Specialist.
The Community Engagement Specialist will coordinate city-wide outreach and communications for the Produce Plus program, manage our team of Market Champions, and support our Community Advocates program and policy team. This position would be ideal for someone who is constructively optimistic, enjoys collaborative problem solving, and is committed to building a just food system with the people of D.C.
This position reports to the Deputy Director and supervises the Community Engagement Assistant and the Market Champions.
Produce Plus Program
Support implementation of the Produce Plus program
- Contribute to regular meetings and planning sessions
- Conduct farmers’ market site visits throughout the Produce Plus season
- Support outreach and training for the Farmers’ Market Brigade volunteer program
Manage the Market Champion program
- Train and manage a team of Market Champions who provide outreach and at-market support for key Produce Plus participating markets
- Evaluate Market Champion program and hone processes for implementation
Coordinate customer engagement and communications for the Produce Plus program
- Coordinate design and distribution of Produce Plus outreach materials
- Design and supervise implementation of a customer communications strategy including the Produce Plus Hotline, emails and sms messages, and social media
- Maintain relationships with key service providers and community institutions
- Coordinate online and print advertisements for the Produce Plus program
Expanding Market Champion Program
- Recruit, train and manage a team of Market Champions who support outreach and community engagement to support at food retail beyond farmers markets
- Coordinate partnerships
Advocacy & Policy
- Connect Produce Plus customers to opportunities for engaging in advocacy and shaping food policy
- Amplify the perspectives of Produce Plus customers in food policy spaces
- Support implementation of DC Greens policy strategy-- especially through management of community-based projects, events, and communications
- Support recruitment and training for the Community Advocates program
Community Partnerships & Thought Leadership
- Develop and nurture relationships with partner organizations and key stakeholders
- Participate in local, regional, and national coalitions related to health and food justice
- Share best practices (especially those related to building community ownership and leadership in the food system) with local, regional, and national audiences
- Generate content for DC Greens blog and social media platforms
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of experience in outreach, community organizing, or program coordination
- Proven track record of effectively training and managing volunteers or staff (4+ years experience)
- Knowledge of federal and local food programs and policies
- Resolute and proven commitment to the practice of racial equity
- Strong familiarity with D.C. communities in Wards 1, 5, 7, and 8
- Ability to troubleshoot problems through collaboration
- Excellent interpersonal communication, facilitation, and public speaking skills
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
- Have a driver’s license or ability to obtain one
- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator a plus
- Photography skills a plus
- Familiarity with retail environments a plus
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position, salaried at $52,000 per year, less applicable withholdings, with generous benefits (medical/dental/vision, disability/life insurance, 25 days PTO, employer match on retirement contributions after 2 years, flexible schedule), and a welcoming office setting that strives to provide healthy opportunities for employees to be comfortable, and to treat each other as human beings. This position requires some evening and weekend work.
