Extension Associate in Brewing

We are seeking candidates for an Extension Associate position with responsibilities in a multidisciplinary team in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS).
The incumbent would play a lead role in coordination of brewing and distilling extension programs and workshops, leveraging connections with faculty, staff, and statewide extension personnel. These would include educational programs supporting the growth and quality improvement of premium craft beverage products throughout the state. Examples include organization of statewide beer and spirits industry workshops, hands-on short-courses, regional meetings, conferences, and coordination of sensory panels for research and extension goals. Located at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station (NYSAES) in Geneva, NY, the successful candidate will be expected to work in collaboration with CALS faculty in Geneva and Ithaca, Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) associates throughout the state, and regional and national beer and spirits industry stakeholders.
Responsibilities will also include the coordination and scheduling of fermentations and evaluations at the Vinification and Brewing lab in Geneva. This will require communication with enology lab staff and faculty members. The incumbent will take part in the preparation of written and digital extension publications focusing on issues of importance to the NY brewing and distilling industry.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of an MS degree in food science or a related field with a scientific and practical background in brewing and/or spirits production and two or more years of related work experience. Requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build cooperative, effective working relationships with a range of individuals, including industry members, university alumni, faculty, and staff. Experience working in the beer or spirits industry is desired.
STARTING DATE: April 2018 or as negotiated
Term: 1 year term renewable based on performance and funding

DEPARTMENT AFFILIATION: The successful candidate will be located in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, and based in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Cornell’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, NY. This position reports to Dr. Anna Katharine Mansfield, PI of the Cornell Enology Extension Lab. The Food Science Department in CALS offers comprehensive research, teaching, and extension programs.
