IT'S NOT WHAT YOU LOOK AT THAT MATTERS . . . it's what you see.
Each week you read these newsletters, mostly crafted by Taylor (hello there!), and made infinitely more witty and wonderful by Dorothy's edits. For those of you who haven't heard, we're both white women in our early 30's. We currently live about 90 minutes apart in New York state, with snail mail addresses associated with Hudson and Hastings-on-Hudson, respectively. While we feel fortunate to have crafted some seriously wonderful good food jobs for ourselves, we love that our work weaves into all of the other things in our lives that we find really welcome and challenging and enriching, such as gardening, cooking, raising another human (in Dorothy's case), or contributing to other food related businesses, including one that we are building from scratch (in Taylor's experience) - so at any given time, we could be job seekers or posters on the site that we helped create.
Where we live, how we identify, and what we are up to are not our only defining characteristics, but they help paint the picture. They give voice to some of the larger stories.
This past week, we implemented a new format for the Join feature on Good Food Jobs, aka our registration process. If you are joining us for the first time, you'll notice that we ask some specific and detailed questions, including your birthdate, gender, location, race, and whether you identify as a job seeker or job poster (or neither, or both).
It's not our intention to define our community by these identifying characteristics, but we want to enhance your picture. When we look at all of you, we don't see percentages, we see a story.
In the handful of days since we implemented the new form, a few hundred new people have joined the site. And we're amazed with what we're seeing. For example, based on anecdotal evidence, we guessed that there are more women than men using the site. But if this week is any indication, the balance is much more 50/50. It always seemed likely that most of our users reside in NYC, but there is an astounding amount of geographic diversity, including folks from 28 states, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Romania, Korea, India, and Italy. And their ages range from 21- 61, with a surprisingly wide spread (no, you don't have to be in your 20's to have, or want, a good food job).
We thoroughly enjoy learning a little bit more about each of you. We know that you are all so much more than an email address (or a very brief list of questions).
We feel honored to continue to get to know you, and to serve you. It's been a real pleasure, because what we see, over and over again, is an incredible community of people who make us feel less alone in our pursuit to share good food.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
