IF YOU ARE GOING THROUGH HELL . . . keep going.
Somehow the days continue to pass. Regardless of the sadness that we endure, the grief that we share, the conflicts we continue to have. The intensity of our emotions often makes it hard to imagine how we can continue to move forward. It can be overwhelming - like time is happening to us, rather than us moving through time.
So what can we do?
We can keep going. But not with blinders on. We can acknowledge the pain, work through the confusion, and share in the celebration. The key to it all is that we're doing it together.
We recently caught up with the good folks at Soul Fire Farm. We've been following their Schmita year and accompanying Love Notes from Abroad, and were eager to hear about their transition back to American soil. Jonah noted that a most valuable part of the experience was seeing how humans interacted with each other in other cultures - they brought food to each other, valued time with family, they shared, and they cared. These basic acts - practiced over and over again - illustrated how they relied on and appreciated each other on a fundamental level.
In our culture, which seems to push forward like a whirlwind around us, it's hard not to feel overwhelmed with work and money and the news and the pressure to do something that 'matters'. With so many options and so much stimulation, it's easy to feel like you have to be doing something all the time. But there is such value in being in the moment, connecting with other people.
We spent the past weekend with a GFJ user, with whom we'd connected over email months back. Although we were technically strangers, by weekend's end we felt like close friends. We shared some laughs and cries and - of course - some very good food. Setting aside the time to spend with her helped us all to slow down and experience something new. Among the things that we did together was participate in #theartofworth project, which asks you three simple questions: 1) My greatest wish is . . . 2) If I could ask for anything it would be . . . , and 3) I have not asked for it because . . . .
Responses from dozens of strangers were hung on clothesline for all to read and connect with. The one featured below (in our Instagram feed) sums up a deep desire we hear over and over again: My greatest wish is to make a living that supports my family while not having to spend all of my time away from them to do it.
We are all - remarkably - a lot closer than we think. If you are feeling untethered this week, here are some ways to find your people:
BE A PART OF THE WORK AT SOULFIRE FARM
Contribute to their Raise the Roof for Food Justice campaign
Soul Fire Farm is a Certified Naturally Grown family farm, community resource, and vessel for education. They raise life-giving food and act in solidarity with people marginalized by food apartheid. With deep reverence for the land and wisdom of our ancestors, they work to reclaim our collective right to belong to the earth and to have agency in the food system. Their reputation as a national leader in food justice is so much bigger than the existing operation that they've built over the last three years. The money they raise will help create infrastructure for more programming and food distribution - satisfying the demand to help train and educate more leaders to replicate the incredible work that they are doing.
Host a Soul Fire Farm Experience in Your Community
They are just one farm and one family. The strength in the movement comes from how we all contribute together. Check out the resources that they provide to have an impact in your own community. There is good work to be done everywhere.
Give In Kind Donations
Your contribution can go far beyond money. Often people don't realize how much they have to give. Their wish list includes everything from old items you might no longer have use for (from rain coats to office supplies to frequent flier miles) to special skills (such as accounting, plumbing, or social media).
PARTICIPATE IN #THEARTOFWORTH PROJECT
By answering the three simple questions. Do it for yourself as a useful reflective practice.

details / GFJ + ECOPRACTIUM Everything But the Kitchen:
A Comprehensive Engagement with the Regional Food System
Thursday September 17th - Sunday September 20th
Camp Shomria, Liberty NY (Catskills)
Just because you work in food doesn't mean you have to work with food. This practicum offers professionals and jobseekers in the GFJ community knowledge, connections, and skills to more effectively participate in the good food revival - extending far beyond working in the kitchen. We'll explore the less-obvious, but equally important food work - pertaining to renewable energy, water quality, seed saving, waste water, and composting. The program will include:
Visit Apple Pond Farm & Renewable Energy Education Center
and learn how they power their home with wind and solar
Work on Wildflower Farm and Aquaculture Center
and see how their closed-loop system uses the wastewater from their tilapia to grow vegetables
Meet regional Slow Food coordinator and farmer at Channery Hill Farm
and learn about the politics and science of seed saving
Participate in an on-site composting workshop
and learn about the basic science of soil
Build a rain catchment system and learn about the Catskills reservoir network,
which makes up the largest unfiltered water system in the world
accommodations / We're keeping it rustic. Join us at Camp Shomria in Liberty, NY (the Catskills): shared cabins (w/ electricity), central bathroom and shower facility, open fires allowed
