WHEN WE ASK SOMEONE IF WE CAN PROFILE THEM ON THE BLOG . . . the initial reaction is often one of surprise. 'You want to profile ME? But I haven't made it yet.' We hope that you realize by now that the blog profiles are not a static thing. The people that have been featured do not remain frozen in time (in fact, we love running into folks and seeing what they've been up to since their interview) - we are merely checking in at one point along the spectrum.
And we try to respect the spectrum. It's less of a 'list of boxes to check off', and more akin to a sliding scale, where we continue to learn and grow and contribute. There's not really an ultimate end goal in sight because there is never a shortage of work to be done, or things to be learned. Human life is far too short to absorb it all, or to be limited in possibility.
So this week's profile is a snapshot of the most important 'job' that we can think of: a student of life. When we met Katelyn in person, we were taken with her ability to explore, and all that she's subsequently learned by forming deep connections with different people and places. She'll willingly admit she doesn't 'have it all figured out', but what we like best is that it never stops her from reaching out, asking questions, sharing knowledge and experiences, and exploring.
Here are some resources inspired by Katelyn and her adventurous spirit:
THE MORAL BUCKET LIST
Do you radiate an inner light? This NY Times article caught our eye this week.
ECO LEAGUE
Next year Katelyn is off to Green Mountain College, which is part of the Eco League. We have a hunch she'll make good use of the consortium's benefits.
FOOD & BEVERAGE VOLUNTEER CONSULTANT IN CAMBODIA
We no longer post unpaid opportunities on the site, but we can't help but want to spread the word about this opportunity. It came recommended by our favorite teacher (we met her in college, but respect her most for what she's continued to teach us about life outside of school) who has volunteered for the last few years.
THE JULIA CHILD AWARD DESIGN RFP
Another unpaid position that we're compelled to share. This October, the Julia Child Foundation will present the first annual Julia Child Award. We admire Julia's legacy of determination. Above all, she loved to learn and share. She exhibited such a fierce curiosity, strong work ethic, and infectious personality. And those are all things that we can get behind.
SETH GODIN'S FREELANCER COURSE
The word 'job' often conjures up very specific images (think 9-5, salary, paid holidays, benefits), but we've found that a livelihood can come in a variety of forms. There's a lot of magic in self-directing your work. Seth always proves that there is plenty to learn outside of a traditional school. He had us at, 'So you can go to the world and say, 'I made this. And so the world can say back to you, 'Thank you.'
STERLING COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAMS IN FOOD & FARMING
Because colleges are not just for full-time students. These continuing education courses range from an Artisan Cheese Institute to Bicycle Touring to Draft Horse Farming. Just a fair warning: you will want to attend at least one (if not more). Explore all 19 options here.
SLOW LIVING SUMMIT
We've been dying to attend this yearly gathering since we've known it existed, and this year Taylor will be there. If you are planning to go, let us know. We'd love to see you. (Pssst . . . we can even issue you a 20% off code).
Your fellow students of life,
Taylor & Dorothy
