MAN WHO FEARS SUFFERING... is already suffering from fear.
The new year is upon us, and as per last week's newsletter, we're opting to cast overarching resolutions aside and come up with a list of 100 distinct things we'd like to do / see / accomplish / try before 2016. We're crossing them off one by one, and the 'completed' column already includes a dozen experiences that we'd been meaning to accomplish for the better part of 2014. The rule of thumb is: when you say things out loud, they instantly become more possible.
But this circles around to another natural conundrum: don't jinx it.
One of the hardest things to do is to admit when you want something - really want something. To say that you want it leaves you more vulnerable to the possibility that you might undergo some sort of suffering - be it embarrassment, shame, hurt, disappointment, frustration, or pain - if it doesn't actually come to fruition. We have to work against that fear on a daily basis, and remind ourselves that vulnerability is not the same as weakness. In fact, unlike fear, vulnerability can actually make us stronger.
We wish you a 'list' that is full of balance, with some items that are purely easy and enjoyable, and others that are meaningful because they are challenging.
Your companions,
Taylor & Dorothy
