JUDGMENT.
It is so hard to escape it. In fact, it may be impossible to do so. So instead of pretending it doesn't exist, let's instead consider the ways we might be able to change the culture surrounding how and why we judge everything.
So many of our judgments come in the form of first impressions. We'd like to share a few examples.
#1 CAMP SHOMRIA
Earlier this month, we co-hosted the Everything But The Kitchen program with the wonderful folks of Eco Practicum. While putting together the event plan, we had two options: we could rent a house complete with modern appliances and conveniences (such as a hot tub) - or we could make use of the accommodations at Camp Shomria. With an adventurous spirit, we chose the latter.
When we arrived at the camp our first impression was, 'Hmmm...Did we make the wrong decision? Will other people mind the truly 'rustic' atmosphere?' The camp was very clearly inhabited by teenagers all summer, and lacked the obvious amenities. The paint was peeling, the bathrooms were down the hall, and the beds were not plush.
Once more people started arriving and the excitement and distraction of the weekend got underway, all of those impressions melted away. In the light of the evening campfire, not much else seemed to matter. And after four short days, we all felt an intense fondness for our environment that I never would have anticipated on arrival.
#2 NICOLE TAYLOR
If you are are a particularly loyal GFJ newsletter reader, you may recall having seen Nicole's name before. In fact, Nicole is the very first person to have called our attention to our 'color bland' blog profiles. At first, we had a hard time hearing what Nicole had to say. It was easy to feel defensive, and it took a few months for her feedback to really sink in.
Eventually, our first impressions gave way to the lasting impact of her genuine insight. We are so thankful that she stuck with us. And so glad to share her story with you today.
Most often we judge ourselves more harshly than anything else. We are hardwired to react reflexively - and that's okay. But it's possible to train ourselves to slow down, think about what holds value, and act accordingly. Chances are the the harvest that you reap will be so much more rewarding that way.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy

At our recent retreat, we confirmed that THE PEOPLE that use GFJ are the most enriching / enlightening / promising thing about this whole project / business / endeavor. That is why we are always trying to get to know you better.
Over the summer we enhanced our registration process by asking new users for more information about themselves. We're offering the same questionnaire to existing users when you log in. We appreciate your sharing so that we can better understand our audience and create ever more useful tools for you. (Psst! Only 5% have shared so far. Fill out your questionnaire today and help us paint a better picture of the GFJ community.)
Let the record show that the information that we collect merely scratches the surface. We know that your geographic location / gender / age / ethnicity are but small parts of the complete package. Rest assured that this is just one small effort that we are making to get the wheels in motion - there are so many more to come. We appreciate your patience and your interest as we continue to seek and test out the best ways to connect this brilliant community unique individuals.
PS do you get the creeps that we are collecting this information? If so, let us know. We're not afraid to come up with alternatives. Most importantly, we welcome the dialogue. We've got a lot more in the pipeline, including a revised Post a Job page with lots of new features, a new and improved My Account section of the site, and a completely revamped mobile site. We hope these improvements will make GFJ easier and more delightful and impactful to use than ever.
