5,000 Reasons to Celebrate
We're al . . most . . there. The job tally today is 4,969, so it's inevitable that we will cross the 5,000 job mark this week.
While we understand that there are over 300 million people that live in the United States alone (and that a mere 5,000 seems miniscule in comparison) 5,000 is still an incredible number considering that every single job - and every single person - makes a difference every day. That's 5,000 more people that are supporting small businesses, educating countless people on food, providing examples on how to make a living doing what you love, and slowly transitioning us to a real food economy.
We document stories of individuals every week on the gastrognomes blog, but we always want to do more, tell more, support more, provide more proof and inspiration.
So tell us the ways that your good food job contributes to the cause (or if you have yet to have a good food job, what you do in your personal life to support and/or promote good food). We anticipate that when we add them up, there will be FAR more than 5,000 reasons to celebrate, and we'll be tweeting them out under the hashtag #5000strong all week long.
Here's our contribution:
-
we have posted nearly 5,000 good food jobs
-
we've helped gather over 20,000 people who all believe in good food
-
each day we interact with people who want to change the world for the better
-
we devised ways to see and document how people change the world for the better
-
we created a job that pays us enough to buy farm fresh eggs, real butter, and invest in building our own garden
-
we feed the people around us real food, made from scratch
Thank you for sharing this with us. Good Food Jobs would be nothing without a community of people supporting the belief that we can make the world a better place with good food.

YOUR STORIES
Last week we asked you for your GFJ story (i.e. how Good Food Jobs helped you do something that changed the world), and here are a few excerpts of your responses:
...I share all this to say thanks to you. You've been there from the very beginning. From the first moment I began asking questions of where my food was grown and wondered whether the hands that cared for it were being cared for too. To deciding that this was what I wanted to dedicate my lifes work too. I am excited for this new adventure and feel lucky to be part of something that isn't about me, but about the collective, about empowering margainalized communities through the simple, yet powerful act of cooking. Maeve
I learned that Farm to Table isn't really an accurate depiction of what we're doing when we say "I want to change the food system". It's really Farm to Soul - you've got to account for all the love that goes into this project. And that's what I felt at Sterling. Unconditional and unrelenting love for the earth, for the neighbors, for the plants, for the food, and for each other. Molly
My girlfriend and I were looking for something different to do for the summer, something outside the city so I started to look on GFJ. I ended up finding the most perfect match with a farm an hour away that was looking for a couple to apprentice from April-November. We moved out to the farm, and we're halfway through the season and it has been AMAZING. I have seriously high hopes for whatever I find next, and GFJ is definitely the first place I'll be looking! Sarah
GFJ helped me land (via helping me discover) a job as an animal husbandry intern with Living Lands Agrarian Network in Nevada City, California. Living Lands is a growing nonprofit that facilitates land exchanges between people with land they want to see farmed, and people who want to farm land. We also do youth education, intern education, and community outreach, at the moment.
Upon being accepted (back in January)... I flew here! I arrived in mid-February, and have been living a charming, agrarian, AMAZING life since then. The foothills are fantastic, the mountains are my backyard and the Bay area is not too far either. The culture here surrounding food and the arts makes up for the lack of ethnic diversity, and it has been a great season. I'm moving on to new farming ventures come November, but would never be the happy, fulfilled young farmer I am today without that job posting! Eliza

Tim Smith
Associate Manager of New Media
Slow Food USA
Tim's story reminds us that a lot of folks find their good food job when they weren't, technically, looking for it. In this case, Tim has his girlfriend to thank for doing the work of scouring our site every day, and noticing that a job opening described him perfectly. Other times, we hear that the recommendation came from a good friend or family member. If we can be just one component of the inspiration behind 'word of mouth,' then resumes like Tim's (and yours) can travel further and wider. Read more...
What's the best tip, advice, or recommendation that you've ever gotten through word of mouth? Tell us about it in the comments section.
