Good Food Jobs is a gastro-job search tool, designed to link people looking for meaningful food work with the businesses that need their energy, enthusiasm, and intellect. We post opportunities with farmers and food artisans, policy makers and purveyors, retailers and restaurateurs, economists, ecologists, and more.
the gastrognomes is a blog for food lovers who want to put their passions to work. We profile the most interesting, engaging, and unlikely food professionals that we find, and we publish them here to inspire you.

"IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO DO IT YOURSELF"
We've used this quote before (from the Do-It-Yourself Business Association website), but we've found that when things truly resonate with us, they warrant repeating.
We are, at times, overwhelmed with the task of 'changing the world for the better'. It's natural to yearn for sweeping change, for big problems to be solved, and to single-handedly make our own large contributions that have lasting impact.
And while in theory that's all great, we can't help but step back and realize how much more meaningful the little things are. How it's not about a few people making big changes (or, for that matter, everyone making big changes - an unrealistic expectation), but about countless people making very small changes. And how these small contributions take form in the most inspiring and innovative ways, allowing us to teach them to and share them with others.
When you work together, it means that instead of fast change, you get REAL change. When you include people, they become participants instead of being spectators. And when you stop searching for the key to influence the 'mainstream', you start to connect with people and develop ideas that address the complexities of nature, of people, and of culture.
So...our goal for the day? To ask people to share their small contributions to the food world. It can be heading to the local farmers' market to buy ingredients for dinner, helping your neighbor weed his garden, or taking the time to write someone and congratulate them on their work in the food world. For everyone who thinks that they don't have a voice: every person matters, every contribution matters. You have only to put it out there and see how it helps us connect, what lasting impact it can have on the world.
Share your small contributions by tweeting @goodfoodjobs with the hashtag #mypart or replying to this email.
Don't be shy. As the internet has taught us, sometimes the most random and ridiculous ideas end up getting the most attention. Hasn't everyone seen the 'I'm Farming and I Grow It' video?
We look forward to learning from you, and hope to inspire a small movement (link courtesy of one of my very fine students, who recommended it; if you like this, you may want to check out a small movement she's inspired.)
And speaking of small revolutions, we have something to celebrate. On May 4th, 2010 we sent out our first email newsletter to friends, family, and some food lovers that we knew. Now we officially have over 20,000 people subscribed to our newsletter! Thanks for your time and attention every week. We know inbox real estate is precious and we appreciate your patronage.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Taylor & Dorothy

Sarah Weiner
Director
Seedling Projects
Working on projects that require funding from outside sources can be daunting. It takes the right kind of personality and drive to cope with the possibility that an event could come together as quickly as it could fall apart. Sarah has had the passion to put the work in when she didn't know if it would pay off. And the Good Food Awards (which, by the way, is coincidentally similar to our own company name - we only wish we could take credit for some of its awesomeness) is an event that really pays it forward for small food producers everywhere.
NOTE: those of you who love a good competition will be pleased to learn that entries for this year's Good Food Awards just opened.
