Good Food Jobs is a gastro-job search tool, designed to link people looking for meaningful food work with the businesses that need their energy, enthusiasm, and intellect. We post opportunities with farmers and food artisans, policy makers and purveyors, retailers and restaurateurs, economists, ecologists, and more.
the gastrognomes is a blog for food lovers who want to put their passions to work. We profile the most interesting, engaging, and unlikely food professionals that we find, and we publish them here to inspire you.
NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY
Seems like GFJ is starting to be the place to go. I have never had much response to ads on some of the other sites but GFJ scored me some great resumes for our Forager position.
- Christophe, Job Poster
Last fall, you posted our internship opportunity on your website, and we found our most wonderful, responsible and enthusiastic interns to date!
- Maggie, Job Poster
Let me start off by saying I’m obsessed with your website. I grew up on a small farm, always loving food, and when I obtained my undergraduate degree I had no idea how to apply my love of food with working in the real world. As soon as your website launched I was hooked.

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT
No, we're not quoting lyrics from Montell Jordan's greatest hit... we're sharing information on our carefully honed network theory.
We see almost everything as an opportunity - to learn, to meet someone special, to make valuable use of any experience or situation.
We spent year one of Good Food Jobs bringing together a unique community of like-minded people with an interest in meaningful work. In year two, it's our intent to develop more (and more) ways to help passionate people apply their energy and enthusiasm to finding their dream jobs.
So this week, it's about making the most of an opportunity that we've created expressly for you. Since our pre-website launch, we've featured food professionals on our blog. And recently we announced our LIVE CHAT feature - what we like to think of as an interactive version of the blog. While we don't usually coordinate our featured guests, we're making an exception and doing exactly that. Take this opportunity to study up on how to put the LIVE CHAT tool to best use, for your own good.
GFJ TIPS FOR LIVE CHATTING
Do Your Research
If you only have one hour with an idol, make your questions count! Don't waste your time asking questions that you could find the answers to with a little online searching.
This week, we've made it extra easy to research our guest Brian Halweil, as he's also our featured blog profile. Get a jump start on the LIVE CHAT by reading about how his experiences have led him to his current good food job(s).
But don't stop there . . . here's some other useful info that Google helped us find . . .
Use the Tools to Your Advantage
Figure out how to creatively use them to make yourself known. For example, in the LIVE CHAT with Amanda Hesser, someone asked "Would you be willing to critique my blog?" She willingly said yes, but had no way of finding it. Next time, cleverly insert your blog name / url / or email address so that people can find you. At the very least, follow up with the expert afterward, before they forget about it.
Keep the Conversation Going
Don't let it stop at the LIVE CHAT. If you see that Brian's speaking somewhere near you, buy a ticket. Is he hosting an event? Ask if you can volunteer. When you reach out, remind him that you were the person that asked the question about 'fill in the blank' on the Good Food Jobs LIVE CHAT. Let him know that you found x, y, or z inspiring about his work and that it caused you to change the world through food in this or that way.
The moral is: when you take the time, make the effort, and think creatively, people notice. And THAT is when you discover that the opportunities you are looking for are within your reach.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy

GFJ DAY
Join us on June 16th!
This is how WE do it. Taylor's hosting her GFJ DAY Meetup atop a hill in the Northeast Kingdom of VT. Dorothy's hosting hers from her tiny Brooklyn kitchen. What we have in common, across distance, is that we're spinning some small batches of homemade ice creams (Taylor will be transforming hers into ice cream sandwiches a la Deb of Smitten Kitchen).
Should you be near either of those locales, stop by and meet other gastrognomes.
Should you be from afar, fear not, as there are 12 other GFJ DAY meetups around the world (yes, there is even one in Japan). RSVP to one of them, or start your own.
ABOUT GFJ DAY
This June 16th, 2012, we're instituting the first ever GFJ DAY, where we invite you (yes, you) to organize and/or attend independently organized ice cream socials. The goal is to eat ice cream (what did you think?) But not JUST that. It’s our intention to celebrate what happens when we come together and build ideas to change our food system for the better.
