Job description Position Overview
The Farm Worker #1 is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of various animals on the farm, including chickens, cows, sheep, and pigs. This position requires attention to detail, the ability to follow routines and protocols, and a commitment to animal welfare. Must be able to routinely complete all of these daily tasks as well as various farm related tasks throughout the seasons.

Key Responsibilities:

 

Chickens:

  • Oversee daily feeding, watering, and cleaning of chicken-related areas and equipment.
  • Regularly collect and wash eggs, and manage chicken health and rotation.

Cows on Pasture:

  • Install grazing divisions, monitor grass quality, and strategically relocate cows to optimize grazing.
  • Maintain cow-related equipment and perform routine health assessments.

Cows in Barn:

  • Manage hay supplies and daily bedding, ensuring clean and accessible water and minerals.
  • Regularly clean facilities and conduct health checks.

Sheep on Pasture:

  • Set up and manage grazing segments using electric netting and adjust sheep placement based on pasture conditions.
  • Maintain equipment cleanliness and conduct health evaluations, including FAMACHA scoring.

Sheep in Barn:

  • Ensure regular supply of hay, water, and clean bedding; maintain cleanliness and health checks.

Sheep and Lambs in Jugs:

  • Daily clean and bed jugs, monitor ewe and lamb health, ensuring effective nursing and milk production.

Pigs in Barn and on Compost Pads:

  • Maintain continuous access to feed and clean water, provide fresh bedding, and perform routine health checks.

Seasonal and Year-Round Tasks:

  • Summer Chores: Morning health checks, maintain clean water sources and equipment, and weekly sanitation of troughs.
  • Winter Chores: Daily health monitoring, manage heating and feeding systems, and perform building maintenance.
  • Year-Round Responsibilities: Maintain detailed records of all farm activities and ensure general farm cleanliness; handle special assignments as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with farm animals is preferred but not required.
  • Tractor experience and equipment/implements maintenance is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to animal welfare.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Effective time management and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to take constructive criticism.
  • Ability to work mostly independently as well as with others.
     

Working Conditions:

  • The role involves significant physical labor and requires working in an outdoor environment.
  • Flexibility in work hours is necessary, including early mornings, weekends, and some holidays.

 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Animal Health and Welfare: Achieve a health issue response time of under 1 hour, maintain less than 5% incidence of preventable health issues annually.
  • Efficiency in Maintenance: Complete daily chore list with 100% compliance to scheduled routines, ensuring all equipment and facilities are operational and clean.
  • Inventory Management: Ensure zero instances of feed shortages and maintain a 100% stocking rate for critical supplies.
  • Record Accuracy: Maintain 100% accuracy in animal health and maintenance logs, with all entries updated by the end of each day.

Compensation:

  • $19-24/hr depending on farm and equipment operation experience.
