GrowNYC, home to the Greenmarket farmers’ market program, is seeking a seasonal Direct Retail Program Associate to join our local food distribution and access team. From July-November, the Direct Retail Program Associate will work closely with the Fresh Food Box and Youthmarket programs, which aim to increase the availability of fresh, local foods in underserved communities throughout New York City. This network of 39 direct retail sites is supplied by Greenmarket Co., GrowNYC’s local food hub and distribution program.

Job description

GrowNYC seeks a highly organized, hardworking individual to oversee warehouse operations for Greenmarket Co., a New York City-based hub for source-verified, high-quality, fair-priced local foods to meet the city’s burgeoning demand for local food in wholesale volumes. Based in the South Bronx, Greenmarket Co. is a local food distribution service with a two pronged mission: to create a profitable business opportunities for regional farm and food businesses, and to create transparent, efficient supply chains that increase all New Yorkers’ access to locally produced food.

Each week, Greenmarket Co. receives more than 100 pallets per week of local farm products and makes deliveries throughout the city to 200 wholesale buyers. Our buyers include restaurants, retailers, senior centers, food pantries, non-profit organizations, and GrowNYC’s own direct retail programming. Greenmarket Co. distributes more than 3 million pounds of local farm products throughout the city each year, with more than 60% of our sales to buyers serving low-income and underserved communities.

Operations Manager Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of Greenmarket Co.’s distribution operation from the arrival of local farm products in our warehouse to client delivery, including receiving, inventory tracking, packing, delivery, and infrastructure;
  • Lead a team of operations staff in receiving, packing, and delivery;
  • Maintain and enhance operational systems and procedures that allow Greenmarket Co. to meet mission-based goals efficiently and effectively;
  • Ensure produce quality through inspection protocols, proper handling, cold chain/temperature maintenance, and diligent inventory control;
  • Work in concert with sales, procurement, and direct retail program staff to support value chains that balance needs of farmers, logistics providers, customers, partners, and programs.

Requirements include:

  • Experience with warehouse operations and fresh produce a must;
  • Awareness of produce quality and food safety standards at a wholesale level;
  • Stellar communication skills and ability to work as part of a close-knit team;
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to manage personnel and foster growth;
  • Systems-based approach to planning and problem solving;
  • Desire and drive to help shape a growing, mission-driven program;
  • The ability to take initiative as well as seek direction;
  • Flexibility, and willingness to occupy a position that grows and changes with the program and organization;
  • Ability to work some flexible hours including very early mornings, evenings and weekends;
  • Physical capacity to lift 50 lbs, stand for extended periods of time, and work in a noisy, fast-paced environment;
  • Clean Driving Record required, CDL and/or forklift certification highly favorable;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Documents, and QuickBooks or comparable software.
