Job description

The general manager oversees all aspects of day-to-day operations at the shop, with an eye towards profitability, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. The person in this role acts with the highest level of integrity and positivity, setting an example for the staff and delighting customers. S/he values employee growth and personal development, working with staff to hone skills and augment training.

The general manager must be an effective leader with excellent communication and decision making skills. Candidates for this position must take pride in developing relationships with customers and staff alike, exhibiting above all a desire to "make it nice". The general manager will pay close attention to the financial health and well-being of the company, and take this into account when making decisions. Finally, it is essential that s/he foster and maintain a positive, open-door work environment that keeps staff engaged and on mission to increase sales and profitability.

Daily Responsibilities:

Human Resources
● Supervises and schedules store staff for weekly shifts
● Recruits and reviews skilled applicants for store staffing
● Oversees store staff training and training programs

Safety & Sanitation
● Maintains compliance with store health and safety policies
● Implements store policies in line with requirements of relevant oversight bodies (including the NYC Health Dept; Ag & Markets; FDA; etc)
● Manages emergency situations and accidents, and ensures proper procedures are followed

Sales & Customer Service
● Motivates store personnel to provide excellent customer service, enhance productivity, and market products to increase sales
● Provides excellent customer service, helping customers find products that surprise and delight
● Addresses customer concerns and resolves them with a goal of turning a complaint into a compliment
● Works with ownership and staff to train on and implement the absolute highest level of customer service.  

Finances & Operations
● Implements and reviews opening and closing procedures. Trains new employees and reviews adherence.
● Oversees all day to day store operations
● Strategizes merchandising and manages storewide merchandising initiatives
● Delegates and ensures store merchandising tasks are completed in a timely manner
● Maintains store appearance, cleanliness, and regular sanitation duties
● Oversees stock levels and makes appropriate restocking and buying decisions
● Manages cash handling and till procedures, including but not limited to deposits, petty cash and drawer accountability

Other Responsibilities
● Communicates issues and concerns to owner in a timely and confidential manner
● Performs other related duties as required

Desired Qualifications:
● Extensive supervisory experience, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, compensation review, and firing
● Working knowledge of store point-of-sales systems and reasonable computer literacy (esp. Microsoft Excel)
● Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously and make tough decisions
● Minimum of three years of retail grocery management experience
● Must be able to stand for work shifts of 8+ hours
● Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds

This position is salaried. Compensation is strictly dependent upon experience. A competitive benefits package is included.
