Job description

Position Summary
Located in Davis, California, this position reports to the Executive Director (ED). The Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides the leadership, management and vision necessary to ensure that the organization has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to effectively grow the organization, ensure its financial strength and maintain its operating efficiency. The COO will lead all internal operations through a respectful, constructive and energetic style, guided by the mission of the organization. This is the #2 position in the organization.

Essential Functions
  • Working in partnership with the ED, create the strategic five-year plan and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it.
  • Serve as the internal leader of the organization:
    • Coordinate the annual operations plan and budget
    • Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against the goals of the organization
    • Provide a strong day-to-day leadership presence; bridge national and regional operations and support an open-door policy among all staff
  • Provide oversight to all areas of the organization, whose responsibilities are as follows:
    • Development
      • Raise local funds
      • Build local fund raising and sales infrastructures within local offices
      • Generate sufficient local revenue to cover local costs
      • Increase fee-for-service contracts
      • Identify geographic growth opportunities and priorities
      • Communicate the branded message internally and externally
      • Administrative aspects including proposal preparation and grant writing
    • Programs
      • Increase key impact measurements for FVC programs such as Homegrown by Heroes and the Fellowship Fund
      • Oversee the development of curriculum, tools, and training that meet cost guidelines
    • Finance, Technology, and Human Resources
      • Cultivate the values of FVC within the organization
      • Instill a human capital development and “coaching” culture within FVC; ensure the human resources function provides superior training, development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation process and recruiting
      • Develop an accounting system that provides the organization with quick access to financial information and enables strategic budgeting
      • Analyze the current technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of information technology and financial systems that support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall
      • Budgeting
      • Development and implementation of systems for reporting, measurement and supporting local revenue generation
      • Administrative aspects including proposal preparation and grant writing
  • Work with the national board of directors: Assist the ED in presenting to the board at quarterly meetings.
Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

  • Skilled in organizational development, staff management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning.
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the mission.
  • Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrate resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field required.
  • Master’s degree in business or related field preferred.
  • At least ten years of strong operational experience.
  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • Military and/or farming background highly desired
