Job description
The Street Vendor Project (SVP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks a motivated and organized individual to manage and run the Vendy Awards, the street food event that Mario Batali called "the Oscars of food for real New Yorkers."
The Vendys were founded in 2005 to celebrate street food vendors and all they contribute to New York City. They are the yearly fundraising event for SVP, a membership-based non-profit organization that advocates for vendors and their rights.
Over eleven years, the Vendys have become one of the most loved and celebrated food events in the country. The Vendys also takes place in Philadelphia, Los Angeles (through a partnership with LA Weekly’s Tacolandia) and most recently, the Vendy Awards launched Vendy Plaza, an outdoor food market located at La Marqueta in East Harlem. We would like to continue to grow the Vendys presence locally, nationally and internationally.
Under supervision of the Director of SVP, the Managing Director will be in charge of the entire Vendy franchise, including all existing events, future events, and related activities, including:
- Producing each event, including all logistics and details (venue, permitting transportation, entertainment, etc.)
- Overseeing Vendy Plaza and managing the Vendy Plaza Market Manager in their day-to-day activities
- Recruiting and negotiating with corporate and media sponsors
- Developing relationships with local partners in each market
- Building and working with the Event Committee who help produce the events
- Coordinating all marketing efforts, including artwork, branding, and web design
- Managing our PR efforts by issuing and responding to press releases
- Developing and maintaining relationships with traditional media, bloggers, and others
- Developing relationships with celebrity talent in order to recruit them as judges to the events, or special guests
- Maintaining and growing our social media presence
We seek an individual with:
- A facility in building relationships with diverse groups of people
- Strong management, organizational skills, and decision making abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to multitask multiple projects and work well under pressure
- Experience in fundraising, marketing and/or event planning
- The capacity to work independently
- A passion for street food and a demonstrated commitment to social justice
This is a full-time position with flexible hours and work location. Regular weekend work and some travel is required. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position will begin immediately.
Street Vendor Project (SVP) is a worker center that represents and organizes the 20,000 self-employed workers who make their living selling food and merchandise on the streets and sidewalks of New York City. We have nearly 2,000 members who have united together for mutual aid and to amplify their collective voice in the political area and the public discourse. We offer our members training, micro-loans, legal representation, and other services.
