Pickards Mountain Eco-Institute is currently seeking a qualified part-time Permaculture Educator & Garden Manager to join our team. This person ideally has a background in sustainable and organic farm management, a desire to share their knowledge and experience farming with others, a deep love for the natural world, and should feel aligned with the mission of PMEI. The garden manager will work closely with other PMEI staff, and will be under the direct supervision of the Executive Director.*PMEI’s sister company, the Honesuckle Teahouse is also looking for a part-time garden manager to oversee the herb gardens. The goals of the one-acre vegetable and herb garden are:
-To provide fresh produce for weekly community events
-To provide fresh produce for fellowship students’ daily meals
-To provide hands-on, experiential learning opportunities for all participants in Pickards Mtn Eco-Institute’s educational programs
Responsibilities include:
- All aspects of planning and overseeing cultivation of PMEI’s one-acre vegetable and herb garden, including (but not limited to) greenhouse seeding, transplanting, organic pest and disease management, weeding, harvesting, soil fertility maintenance, watering and composting.
- Managing volunteers and PMEI fellowship students on the farm during fellowship seasons (10-week Spring Session and 10-week Fall Session)
- Instructing PMEI fellows in the field during garden work times on sustainable and organic agriculture methods
- Holding weekly Saturday classes with PMEI fellowship students & community members on Permaculture Foundations
- Maintaining a neat and orderly appearance on the farm
- Maintaining farm tools and purchasing farm supplies as needed
- Attending a one hour staff meeting each week
The garden manager will work approximately 30 hours per week for the months of February through November, with the exception of June and July which are negotiable. Winter will be off.
Position Requirements:
- Experience managing a small-scale organic farm is preferred
- Experience working on sustainable, biodynamic and/or organic farms
- Experience managing or working with young adults
- Permaculture Certification
- Basic understanding of the fundamentals of Biodynamic Farming
- Teaching experience related to gardening/farming or environmental sustainability
