About the Job:

Blue Bottle is writing a new chapter to the story and traditions of coffee, food and hospitality, and the People Operations team is helping us build the company and culture to do it. The People Operations Business Partner, based in Los Angeles, will help our Southern California leaders and employees do their best work through supporting a variety of processes and programs related to every aspect of the employee experience. We are building the next great company that everyone wants to work for, and this role is critical to pursuing that mission in one of our most important and growing markets. 

You will:
  • Support our managers in organizational, people planning, and decision-making and solve thorny employee problems and situations doing right both by the company and the people
  • Find ways to make every aspect of the employee lifecycle a delightful and hospitable experience, from recruiting/onboarding to offboarding and everything in between
  • Ensure we always meet our legal and compliance obligations (both federal and LA-specific)
  • Help drive LA-specific recruiting efforts, especially for retail managers and baristas
  • Advise and support managers on specific company policy and procedure questions
  • Assist in manager and employee trainings and individual 1:1 coaching where appropriate
  • Assist with core People Operations administrative work such as verification of employment requests, response to LA unemployment and disability claims, workers’ comp claims, etc.
 You are:
  • Able to combine great people intuition, business judgment and discretion in your decision-making
  • A deeply empathetic listener who people naturally go to for help or another perspective
  • Someone who inherently believes in the potential within people, but also recognizes problems and doesn’t shy away from ‘tough love’ messages to help them grow and succeed
  • Collaborative and build trust-based relationships with executives, managers, and employees
  • Clear and effective communicator in both conversation and written word
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to prioritize while not letting anything drop
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, rapidly changing environments, and building from scratch
 You have:
  • 3+ years experience as an HR generalist or business partner, ideally in consumer retail
  • Strong grasp of US- and LA-specific labor law and practices, especially related to hourly workers
  • Broad familiarity with general HR disciplines and best practices (i.e., recruiting, training, compensation/benefits) and ability to apply them with judgment to LA-specific situations
  • Specific experience with employee relations and navigating difficult situations and conversations
  • Last but not least, a deep love for great coffee, food, and exceptional customer experience
