Job description
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
FoodCorps is a fast-moving new national nonprofit organization that seeks to combat childhood obesity while building community and training the next generation of farmers and public health leaders. The centerpiece of our work is an AmeriCorps youth service program. Our first 50 service members (selected from more than 1200 applicants) just started a year of paid public service in which they’re conducting nutrition education, building and tending school gardens, and sourcing farm-fresh food for school meals in limited-resource communities. Within a decade, we expect to deploy an annual service force of 1,000.
FoodCorps is a dynamic start-up with strong potential for growth, working at the intersection of the most pressing issues of our time: childhood obesity, social justice, environmental sustainability, and the way we farm, eat and educate. The organization uses a model of national service that has helped programs like Teach for America, Habitat for Humanity and City Year become catalytic change-makers, leveraging federal funds to drive corporate and philanthropic investment in the public good. FoodCorps is led by a young team of social entrepreneurs with expertise, passion, and a commitment to having fun.
THE POSITION
Reporting to and collaborating with the Executive Director (Curt Ellis, Peabody-winning filmmaker of the food documentary King Corn), the Development Director will be a strategic, energetic and visionary thinker who thrives on the immediate challenge of building a philanthropy program with a long-term vision for growth. The Development Director will be metrics-focused and a strong communicator, cultivating relationships with federal, corporate, foundation and individual donors. Development Director will be responsible for a current annual budget of $2 million, with significant growth expected. Work will be based in a New York office with moderate travel, and will use Google and Salesforce platforms.
EXPERIENCE
Candidate should demonstrate mastery of skills across the advancement spectrum (government, corporate, institutional and individual giving; financial management and impact measurement; board and partnership development; database implementation and management; pitching and grant-writing). Candidate should have three years of experience leading the development program at a high-performing organization, preferably a social venture start-up. Evidence of creative fundraising resulting in $1M+ gifts and direct experience in the health, food, environment or national service sectors is preferred. Candidate must be able to persuasively convey the mission of FoodCorps to donors, executives, board members and policy-makers, must have a commitment to equity and justice, and must be excited to join a spirited young team.
