The mission of the PJCC’s new “Justice Garden” is to grow organic produce to help feed local families at InnVision Shelter Network. We will also provide social action, learning activities, educational workshops, gardening instruction, and much more. By practicing the Jewish value of repairing the world, tikkun olam, we will literally sow the seeds of justice for people in need.

The PJCC is a beneficiary of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, and Sonoma counties.

Position Description:

The purpose of this position is to:
  • Provide skilled garden care and management for our community garden.
  • Manage the day-to-day development and maintenance of the garden, which includes but is not limited to plant care, greenhouse management; maintaining and ordering supplies as well as managing the education components of the garden including facilitating weekly learning sessions for our preschool and afterschool programs and monthly community garden work days.
  • Serve as the staff liaison with our partner and beneficiary, InnVision Shelter Network.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Manage all aspects of care and maintenance of the garden including planting, harvesting and maintenance
  • Perform skilled gardening tasks efficiently and effectively
  • Train volunteers and lead school and community groups to work in the garden.
  • Source garden materials and supplies (lumber, soil, compost, seedlings, irrigation supplies
  • Prioritize daily tasks based on scope of work and budgeted hours
  • Maintain accurate records of tasks completed, yield produced and products applied at the garden.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of organic vegetable gardening, plants, plant care, soil, fertilizing and sourcing necessary supplies;
  • Knowledge of maintenance techniques, methods and tool use;
  • Ability to perform plant/pest identification and identify common pests in the landscape and take corrective action;
  • Knowledge of organic pest control methods;
  • Ability to courteously communicate with a range of age groups including children and adults;
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions as well as guide and give instructions;
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills;
  • Comfortable with managing and making decisions;
  • Proven ability to multi-task and solve problems creatively and effectively.
Education/Experience:
  • Strong knowledge of gardening and irrigation practices with minimum of 3 years horticulture experience required
  • Experience teaching and facilitating learning sessions for children and adults
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Degree in horticulture or a related field is desirable, but not required
  • Background in Jewish Education and/or Jewish Social Justice strongly preferred.

Hours:

Hours vary from 10 to 20 per week

Salary: $18-22/hour
