Job description

Sawkill Farm is seeking a chef to oversee all aspects of its farm kitchen operation.  The ideal candidate will be passionate about creating seasonal, protein-based recipes for our loyal customers and have the kitchen experience to produce those recipes in a cost-effective way.  This chef will be responsible for creating frozen, shelf-stable and ready-to-eat foods at our farm store and farmers' markets.  The chef will also be responsible for leading the kitchen for on-farm dinners and events.

About the Farm

Sawkill Farm is a diverse 115 acre farm in the Hudson Valley that specializes in grass-fed and pasture-based meats.  We raise beef, pork, chicken, and lamb.  We sell direct to consumers at 5 farmers’ markets in New York City and from our on-farm store.

This is a great position in a quickly expanding operation.  The ideal person for the job will have the desire to create and manage a unique enterprise and to play a significant role in the development of the farm business.  We are looking for someone who is talented, self motivated, entrepreneurial and whose personality clicks with ours.

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Experience creating value-added products from whole animals in a production kitchen
  • Knowledge of NY Ag & Markets, NYS-DOH & USDA standards and processes
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to lead and organize kitchen operation including inventory and finances
  • Demonstrated cooking ability, specifically in regards to meat, sausages, smoked products, stocks
  • Cleanliness and regular maintenance of equipment

Compensation

This is a full-time, hourly position, starting at $15/hr.
