Job description

Clean Plates is an easy way to eat healthier and more sustainably without sacrificing taste. It’s a new, better way to find restaurants you’ll love. We’ve built a directory of restaurant reviews on the web (and a printed guide book). We need you to help us create new original content that will highlight the gems in our database across all digital platforms (blog posts, email newsletters, guest posts on other blogs, social media, in-app content). This job consists of managing the flow of content creation from writer to publication. You’ll report to C-level staff and hire a team of writers that you’ll directly coordinate.

While you’ll work closely with our review team, this position does NOT cover in-field restaurant reviews or content in our printed guide books. Rather, this role oversees timely newsworthy announcements, health & nutritional tips, and daily, weekly and seasonal “digest” posts that will help people make a faster and better restaurant selection.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Managing Editor will first be responsible for creating a style guide based on the Clean Plates book to be used by freelance contributors.
  • You’ll be crafting messaging on the site consistent with the brand and you’ll be responsible for managing the voice across mediums
The Managing Editor will recruit, hire and train writers.
  • You’ll post ads and develop trial projects to discover writers who will round out your content team - (Yes, you can hire your friends -- if they rock)
The Managing Editor will develop a regular editorial calendar and lead a team of writers, editors and freelancers to create unique and original content.
  • You’ll add new features to our existing blog new features like Daily Lunch Ideas, Chef Interviews, Nutritional Facts, or your own choosing
  • You'll need to monitor business metrics and develop content ideas based on audience behavior, search data, and your own industry knowledge
  • You’ll edit content to ensure it works in each digital medium
  • You'll manage your team to tweak content items to ensure they work best for each digital medium
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven track record of performance and one of the following: 1+ year experience at a site with 100,000+ monthly visitors or extensive related experience (5+ years at sites with smaller audiences or 3+ years on a print editorial team)
  • Management experience with teams of 5+ people, working on deadline-driven projects
  • Demonstrable headline-writing skills that make us want to click and read more
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and meet deadlines
  • A stickler for the small details
  • Experience in media coverage of the restaurant industry
  • Experience with restaurants, neighborhoods, names of chefs & restaurateurs, and industry “fact check” knowledge for Manhattan, Brooklyn and LA
  • Experience using email newsletters to drive website traffic
  • Proven track record of increasing subscribers, followers, or likes based on content changes (better headlines, more targeted topics, keyword use)
  • Nutritional knowledge (formal training a plus)
  • Active on social media platforms
  • Life changed by Food Inc (or tell us your own story)
