Job description
Do you want to cook three meals a day for a crew of 10-18 people aboard 106' wooden educational sailing vessel?
The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater sails on the Hudson River, teaching school groups and the public about the history and ecosystem of the Hudson River estuary. During the sailing season (April to October), we sail with 12 crew and up to 6 new volunteers each week.
The cook is fully a member of the crew, and is responsible for planning and serving three well-balanced meals per day for all crew and volunteers. The meals must be planned within the budget limitations and time constraints, taking into account special dietary needs. The cook must maintain adequate provisions, including keeping track of propane for the cookstove. The cook works closely with the captain and mate on meal scheduling and provisioning. The galley equipment must be properly maintained and the galley properly stowed. The cook is encouraged, but not expected to participate in the education program, and is required to develop a working knowledge of the vessel and emergency procedures. The cook is expected to train the crew in relief cook duties. The cook should buy local products whenever possible, work to develop relationships with local companies to get food donated, and incorporate our weekly CSA farm share into meal plannina.
Crew live onboard the boat, work five days per week, and are paid a daily rate. All crew are required to pass a pre-employment drug test, and are enrolled in our random drug testing program for the duration of their employment.
