Job Description About Sawkill Farm
Sawkill Farm is an 84 acre diverse farm in the heart of the Hudson Valley that markets healthy, wholesome meat and other farm goods directly through our farm store and three NYC farmers markets.  Our farm store is open four days per week and we also run a small commercial kitchen on the farm.

Job Description
Sawkill Farm is looking for a Livestock Manager starting in the Spring of 2015.

The Livestock Manager will be responsible principally for the care & record-keeping of livestock with a focus on day-to-day operations, building efficient systems, increasing pasture capacities and improving gains in stock.  The manager will be responsible for a small herd of beef cattle, lamb for meat & wool, pasture-raised hogs, chickens for meat and eggs, and turkeys.   We are looking for someone who is passionate about farming with a desire to improve efficiency of small-scale livestock systems and who has the experience to do so.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of pasture-based livestock experience.
  • Must live in the Tivoli/Red Hook area.  (There is no on-farm housing but the farm is 1 mile from town with many housing options.)
  • Must have strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with employers, employees and the public.
  • Proficiency driving a tractor, hand tools, small engines.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.  Must be able to drive a manual transmission.
  • The following personal attributes are valued on the farm: friendly disposition, detail-oriented, keeps quality records, patient and calm with animals, good organization skills.
Responsibilities
  • Sheep: Pasture-lambing in spring, hoof trimming, pasture rotation, manage worming, health and growth plans, assist in scheduling slaughter dates
  • Steers: Monitor health & growth, pasture rotation, autumn calving, ear-tagging
  • Hogs:  Manage feed, water, growth, worming of pasture-raised hogs
  • Laying Hens:  Pasture rotation of 3 mobile coops for over 600 layers, collect, wash & pack eggs, monitor feed amounts in field and in grain bin.
  • Broilers:  Manage day olds to finish of 1000 broilers from to brooder to mobile pens
  • Turkeys:  Manage day olds to finish of 50 pasture raised turkeys
  • General Farm Jobs:  Driving stock to slaughterhouse, farmers market attendance semi-regularly, packing and unpacking of van for market, assist at farm store or in farm kitchen as-needed.
  • All other duties as directed by Farm Manager.
Job Details
  • Job starts Spring of 2015; flexible starting date
  • Must be available to work most weekends as well as some holidays.  Job also requires added hours and availability during key times of year, for example during lambing and calving seasons.
