Job Description English Teacher for Workforce Development (Part-Time-hourly)    

About Hot Bread Kitchen: Hot Bread Kitchen (HBK) is a not-for-profit social enterprise based in NYC that promotes economic independence for foreign-born and low-income women through professional bakery training programs and start-up business incubation programs.

Project Launch, our on-the-job paid bakery program, also includes English classes and places graduate bakers in commercial bakeries. HBK Incubates, our culinary incubator and business development program, provides comprehensive food business support to male and female entrepreneurs of all backgrounds by offering commercial kitchen rental, financial advising, and workshops.     

Job Description: We seek an enthusiastic English Teacher with a passion for the baking industry and someone who wants an exciting opportunity to be part of a passionate and growing company. The English Teacher for Work force Development will be responsible for creating lesson plans for beginner to intermediate English language learners with a focus in bakery knowledge. This position will report to and work daily with the Production Training Manager in lesson development, trainee assessment, and in creating a structured ESL program that encourages the advancement of trainees in professional careers and personal lives post-graduation.  

Specific Duties: 
  • Work with women from low-income and/or immigrant backgrounds teaching baking related and workforce specific ESL.
  • Provide a nurturing, supportive and positive learning environment for trainees The ESL teacher will develop weekly lesson plans that coincide with Project launch’s scope and sequence. The scope and sequence are based on thematic units that provide bakers with the knowledge and language skills needed to advance in their professional careers and personal lives.
  • Work with Production Training Manager to create comprehensive lessons that are help students gain confidence and improve their professional skills.
  • Collaborate with Production Training Manager to create relevant ESL lessons that focus on trainees current work station within the bakery.
  • Teach 2-3 times a week working with beginner to advanced English language learners
  • Maintain office hours once a week: complete the following weeks lesson plan, work one on one with a trainee,  conduct ESL exam placements for new trainees, or other duties as needed.
  • Create and assign trainees homework that promotes the current lesson plan with an emphasis on using baking terms.
  • Work with our Production Training Manager and serve as a contact point for any information that needs to be passed between the staff and trainees
  • Create custom lessons (ESL worksheets) for graduated trainees who want to better their English; this includes working with some market and packaging staff.
  • Work with incubators in the English for Food Business classes. These classes meet once a week and center around helping students develop better English and basic business skills.
  • Update and maintain ongoing measurements on student attendance, quizzes, initial assessments and midterm assessments.
  • Send a weekly email describing what the trainees are learning this week with an attachment of the lesson for that week.
  • Work with students one-on-one to help students with any questions or concerns they have on lessons or any other needs  
Skills and Experience Desired:
  • Extremely organized, impeccable attention to detail, and demonstrates ability to work independently.  
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications including Excel and Word.  
  • Excellent interpersonal service skills. Ability to effectively interact and teach people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.  
  • 1-3 years English teaching experience (preferably with an ESL background)  
  • Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission and products.
  • Flexibility in working part-time   

Schedule: This is a part-time, hourly position with flexible working hours between 12pm-3pm, Monday-Friday, 3-4 days a week.
