Job description
About Us:Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation (NEBHDCo) was incorporated in January 1985 as a 501-C (3) not-for-profit organization with a mission to provide affordable rental housing to low-income residents of Central Brooklyn, with an initial focus on advocacy through block associations, merchant and tenant organizing. The organization’s housing development experience began in earnest in 1988 with a grant from the New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation to develop a 16-unit limited-equity cooperative utilizing a Community Land Trust model.
Position Description:
This consultant position will be part-time, with compensation at $20/hour; the job is currently projected to run from June 16th through November 3rd, 2014. Average hours per week: 15.
NEBHDCo is a 501c3 affordable housing organization working in Central Brooklyn since 1984. We are seeking an urban farming educator and manager to work in three of our food gardens, on varying projects. The season has begun in all of the sites. This new position will be oriented and trained to take over the work. We're looking for someone who has expertise in growing food in urban settings, has strong youth and community leadership skills, enjoys teaching others. Additional projects possible as funding is available. The urban farm manager will be part of our healthy food initiatives and will work closely with the Community Healthy Food Advocate.
152 Tompkins Ave:
Our 152 Tompkins garden employs 7 teenage youth interns in a 30-week program that brings them through a curriculum of garden education and job skills. These young people are currently building raised boxes and have started planting. All of the produce that they grow will be distributed at our nearby Golden Harvest Food Pantry. They are also building raised beds for community gardeners to grow their own food. We’re recruiting gardeners now for those beds.
The Urban Farm Educator and Manager will oversee both the day-to-day maintenance of the garden and work with the youth to increase their skills and knowledge in the garden. The Farm Educator works on a team with two other positions to manage this garden: The Garden Coordinator oversees the crop plan and building in the garden. Together they will also run workshops for staff and community garden members. The Garden Builder works with the youth and community gardeners to build all structures needed for this garden (boxes, shed, compost bin, hoop house, etc).
The youth education program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm during the school year. During the summer, the program is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-6pm. The group also meets occasionally on Saturdays for special workdays and events. All applicants must be available at this time. Average hours for this project: 10 per week.
The Pantry Garden:
Behind our Golden Harvest Food Pantry at 376 Throop Avenue, we have an 11-bed garden that is growing food for the pantry. We are developing a volunteer base to help maintain the garden; the Farm Educator will oversee volunteer days two days per week for 2 hours each day (currently, the schedule is Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-5pm, but this is flexible). The Farm Educator will use this time to identify needs of the garden and will work with the Community Healthy Food Advocate to maintain the garden. Average hours on this project: 4 per week.
Lucille Rose Manor Resident Garden:
Our Senior Residence building at 364 Vernon Avenue has a garden with several raised growing boxes. There is a small group of seniors that grow their own food in these plots. The Farm Educator will create 4 workshops for the Senior garden members to support them and enhance their gardening skills. Each workshop will be approximately 2 hours. Total maximum hours for this project: 15.
