Job description
Edible Brooklyn, the publication with a mission to chronicle and celebrate the food and drink culture of Brooklyn, seeks a print editor. This person will be responsible for all editorial content in Edible Brooklyn magazine, which prints quarterly, and will coordinate with the digital editor to serve all this content through our digital channels.
With a quarterly print magazine, active website and digital properties, rapidly growing social media streams, events and other live activations for readers, Edible Brooklyn is the definitive food voice in Brooklyn.
RESPONSIBILITIES: This person is responsible for print content for the quarterly magazine Edible Brooklyn, which includes planning, assigning, editing, delivering to layout and approving final pages of each issue. This person will also work in close coordination with the digital editor of EdibleBrooklyn.com to promote and effectively deploy print content online, create web extras, commission video and other rich media for Edible’s evolving and growing digital platform.
Specific responsibilities and activities include:
Print responsibilities:
- Commission/edit content to deliver on-time and within-budget four issues of Edible Brooklyn.
- Write editor’s letter/Grist for the Mill for each issue.
- Work in conjunction with deputy editor and photo editor to plan, commission, edit and deliver to layout all text, photos, captions and other content elements.
- Coordinate with Edible Manhattan editor as needed.
- Correspond with Edible’s events team to promote Edible events in the print magazine.
- Attend monthly all-edit meetings.
Digital responsibilities:
- Coordinate with digital editor on digital projects and collaborations (suggest blog content and promo ops, plan content for the weekly blog digest for EdibleBrooklyn.com, etc.).
- Deliver web extras (3-5) for each issue.
- Write minimum of 1 blog post per week for EB.com.
- Work with digital editor to cue up 4 new issue blasts a year for EdibleBrooklyn.com.
- Work with digital editor to ensure print voice is consistent and complementary to digital voice.
- Regular (daily) social media activity from your personal streams in support of editorial role and related to EB content.
- Give input on Events/Guide on EdibleBrooklyn.com.
Other responsibilities:
- Attend all major Edible events (approximately 6 per year, including Good Beer, Good Spirits, etc.).
- Represent Edible at occasional events in Brooklyn, as speaker, moderator, etc.
TIME/HOURS:
This is a part-time job with certain daily and weekly responsibilities. The workload intensifies around the periods in the year when the print issue reaches layout and approaches the printer.
Edible Brooklyn is a work-from-home organization. The print editor will be available during most business hours but can have a flexible work schedule. Weekly calls and/or meetings with other Edible staff are required. We also use a collective workspace in Midtown Manhattan that you would have access to.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- 3-5 years relevant editorial experience.
- Proven track record of developing, writing and editing compelling content (a great, and fast, writer and editor).
- Ability to maintain the Edible editorial voice and mission.
- Superb organizational skills, self-motivation and ability to manage people.
- Web and social media savvy; strong knowledge of current developments in new media communications.
- Understand and obsess over related media and food/drink trends.
- Knowledge/passion about the kind of content covered in Edible Brooklyn: locavore food scene, farmers markets, community gardens, artisan ingredients, small-batch booze, local food policy. In other words, knows a serrano from a habanero at 20 paces, has tasted raw milk, knows the difference between fair trade and estate-grown coffee, understands why New Yorkers have many better seafood choices than imported farmed salmon.
